laceblade: spoof on Berenstein Bears book cover, title: "Learn About Cylons." Brother Bear is aghast. (Truth about Cylons)
Arata the Legend by Yuu Watase - I've read about 15 volumes of this so far, and plan to keep going. This is the manga Watase was meant to write, imo. Or maybe her past experience has led her to the point of being able to produce a very well-paced manga. ALSO HER WOMEN HAVE HIPS. ALWAYS. IN MANGA. IT'S AMAZING. This series runs in Shounen Manga, but I believe that it is a Secret Shoujo Manga. Two young men named Arata exist in different universes. One is a high school boy in Japan who's been bullied and has no friends. The other is a warrior accused of attempting to assassinate the princess he was supposed to become [there's a shortage of girls in his clan]. Due to some sort of temporal rift, they switch places!
In order to help the nearly-assassinated princess restore her power, the Arata-from-our-world becomes a Shō, one who can use a sword-weapon that houses the spirit of a goddess. In order to get the power/weapon [I forget which, probably both] he needs, Arata needs the Twelve Shinshou of this world to submit to him. Clearly everyone thinks that submission is won through battle - EXCEPT THAT ACTUALLY IT'S BY LEARNING PEOPLE'S TRAGIC BACKSTORIES, UNDERSTANDING THEIR FEELINGS, AND HAVING THE PERSON SUBMIT THEIR WILL UNDER ARATA'S BECAUSE THEY DECIDE TO GIVE UP THEIR VENGEANCE/ETC.!!! This is why it is A Secret Shoujo Manga.

This has a lot of really good Oh, shit! plot twists. The plot has dragged for the past few volumes, and I thought the cover for one of the volumes was supposed to be a joke. In it, it's revealed that the spirit of everyone's weapon is an absurdly large-breasted woman. I'm going to go ahead and assume that this was not Watase's idea, but rather her editor's. She blogged about the abuse and harassment she received from her editor while working on this series I'm glad she got rid of him, and I hope she's back in control!

xxxHolic by CLAMP - the volumes I've read so far are rereads, but I never finished this entire series. The art is amazing. It's very peaceful. This remains one of my favorite series.

Memory of Water by Emmi Itäranta. I borrowed this from the library because it was on the most recent Tiptree Award list. I started out pretty dubious about the premise - post-apocalyptic Scandinavian world in which a teenage girl's father performs the Japanese tea ceremony for a living despite the fact that water is hoarded and rationed in their community. The plot is vague, but the plot isn't the point.

Chime by Franny Billingsley - another one of those anachronistically written YA novels, but in this one the protagonist is dealing with a negative thought cycle that will familiar to people with depression.

Yesterday, I was a consumer-whore, and I'm okay with it.

Firstly, in the realm of cheap things, I purchased a flower vase, cheese grater, and plant shelf at St. Vincent DePaul, which were obviously cheap.

I also used a Barnes & Noble gift card that I had received for my birthday to get two xxxHolic manga.

The largest purchase, of course, was my iPod.

I ended up getting an iPod Classic. I figured that if I was going to spend $200 on a 16 GB iPod Nano, I might as well spend $50 more, and get a bigger screen and 120 GB. By the way, my laptop has about 38 GB (I am still using the same laptop I purchased the summer before going to college), so my iPod has 3 times the amount of space as my laptop!

I think that this is the most amount of money I've spent in a store at once (obviously, I spend more on rent, car insurance, etc.).

I struggled a bit with what to name the iPod. My laptop is Watanuki, being basically a house servant. My Internet connection is Himawari, so that every time my laptop (Watanuki) connects to the Internet, it says, "You are connected to Himawari." BECAUSE I AM A SAP.

So at first, I was going to name the iPod Doumeki. But then Antoine pointed out that my iPod is small and black, so I named it Black Mokona instead. [I am waiting for something super badass to name "Yuuko."]

So far, for free, I have downloaded:
Episode 1 of Honey & Clover
A preview special for Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Episode 1 of Naruto: Shippuden

I am a fan of free stuff! Unfortunately, anime seems to be only available via iTunes in English dub, so that is pretty annoying. In the Honey & Clover English dub, all of the voice actors refer to each other by their first name, and it is skeeving me out. Like, "Shinobo." Yuuta Takemoto should not be calling him Shinobu, he should be calling him "Morita-sempai."

I am working on investigating podcasts next, in addition to putting my own music on it. I don't think I've ever listened to podcasts before, aside from Ron Moore's pretentious Battlestar Galactica ones.

It's been busy the last few days, but a good week overall. I had female co-workers over last night. They brought wine, I provided apple butter and crackers, and we watched "Love Actually." My apartment is an efficiency, but spacious enough for a girls' night! Success.

At the moment, I am head-over-heels in love with Terry Moore's Strangers in Paradise, which is a series of graphic novels. I will blog about it at length...at some point.

I've watched the first episode and a half of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, 'cause it's out on DVD, and Netflix sent it to me Tuesday. OMF SO GOOD!!

BUT, people, the entire reason why I'm posting is so that I can link to this post, titled "Why You Should Read xxxHolic. This is me, waving my hands from side to side, calling your attention to this gorgeous and thought-provoking manga series by CLAMP.

If you are looking for a series to use to start reading manga, I highly recommend this one. Rather than write my own entry, please read the one to which I just linked. In fact, have another link. Pretty pictures are included in the post! Seriously, this series is gorgeous, heartwrenching, and funny. If you're brand new to manga, you'll also learn a lot about Japanese manga. And the translation provided by American publisher Del Rey? BEST TRANSLATION NOTES.....EVER. Seriously. The back of every volume provides paragraph-length explanations about Japanese culture that an average American reader wouldn't pick up on. PEOPLE, READ XXXHOLIC. DO IT. And if that left you unconvinced, at least read the persuasive blog post I linked to. Go! Now!
