laceblade: Screencap from FF7, Zak and Cloud escaping from Mako tubes in Shinra mansion (FF7: Cloud/Zack escape)

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

1) The OP for Samurai Champloo. This was the first anime for which I downloaded fansubs, because at college I finally had an internet connection fast enough to do so :*) The OP is stylistically perfect, imo. It perfectly sets the tone for an irreverent show about samurais set to hip-hop music, by the creator of Cowboy Bebop. I still know all the words ;) This show introduced me to MINMI, still one of my favorite artists to listen to. She did the ED, though, not this song!

2) Glee performance of a mashup of Rihanna's Umbrella with Singin' in the Rain, performed on the high school stage full of water. The umbrellas make great props both as canes and for twirling while open, and splashing the water with hands and feet is pretty cool. Everyone looks smart in their suit outfits, it's the end of a guest appearance by Gwyneth Paltrow, where she was pretty great with the kids. It's a great deployment of Matthew Morrison, letting him sing a Broadway tune, and a good use of the kids to keep the beat seamless between the two songs. And any time you get to watch Harry Shum Jr. having the time of his life = good.
I still have a hard time watching a lot of Glee footage that includes Cory Monteith and Mark Salling.

3) The Nibelheim flashback from Final Fantasy VII.

At this point in the game, all you knew about Sephiroth is that he just murdered everyone in the Shinra Building - including President Shinra, previously the biggest villain of the game. You followed a trail of blood throughout the building, having woken in the morning to find your characters' prison cells mysteriously unlocked, and everyone free to go, despite having spent hours breaking into their tough security.

The framing of Cloud's narration - telling the story to the rest of the party members - is the first time this band of randos has been able to talk after a fast-paced introductory section. Seeing Sephiroth's strength during the single battle you enter with him was chilling as a player.

It deepened the story, it introduced Nibelheim and its creepy music, and LATER ON the player's interpretation of reality as based on this flashback gets upended. This is why Tifa has a lot of, "..." going on even though she was present for this event that happened "5" years ago.

The mood, the creepy music, the haunted Shinra building, the human experimentation subplot, all of it was candy. Still my favorite part of the game, I think.

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

These are recent-ish fics in my current fandom. To find out the fandom and the relationships, you'll have to follow the links, and also be logged into your AO3 account.* This is because the fandom is an RPF one, and we do not want these things to be searchable.

Day 1: In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane

I'm not quite sure I'm fulfilling the prompt correctly, but I am going with digital "spaces," which are either fandom-centric or fandom-adjacent.

The first is Tumblr - my account is [tumblr.com profile] ribbonknight, although my understanding is that my content is "dash-locked," meaning you need to be logged into your own account in order to see it. I do this because my current fandom is an RPF one, and we make every effort to keep our weirdo stuff AWAY from the people in question!!
Maybe it's because of the visual nature of the site, but I always find something to make me happy on tumblr. There are fandom-specific people and accounts that I follow, but I also enjoy the serendipitous nature of tumblr, where you get people talking about seasons or just funny comebacks, etc.

Another happy place is the Discord channel associated with my current RPF fandom. There had been a Slack, which then shuttered under semi-lolarious circumstances, and the Slack may or may not have secretly been replaced, idk! The Discord channel is populated by people who'd found each other through Tumblr, and it just facilitates a different way for us to talk to one another.
I'm technically also a member of the "oldschool fandom" one that had been linked around Dreamwidth, but it ultimately had too much activity for me to be able to keep up with it.

Lately, playing Animal Crossing: Wild World on my DS has been a happy place for me. The dreamy low-stakes nature of it reminds me of Glitch. I can also see that in addition to Stardew Valley having lifted a lot of its infrastructure from Harvest Moon games, it clearly took some things from Animal Crossing, too.
I'd played Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp in an app on my phone before coming to WW. I really liked the social nature of Pocket Camp, and being able to see how my friends decorated their spaces, etc. I honestly don't remember why I deleted the app - maybe just got too bored by the daily happenings? I'm not sure.
In WW, there are a few things I do every day - search for the rock that will dispense free coins, buy coffee from the pigeon named Brewster in the basement of the museum, search for fossils, collect and sell fruit, check the recycling bin in City Hall for cool shit, etc. The other townspeople and mail I receive provide some surrealist humor, and it's great all around.
Before starting Wild World, I had been playing Harvest Moon: The Tale of Two Towns on my DS. I liked that game, but it did move SO SLOWLY that I semi-abandoned it in favor of starting a Persona 5 game on my PS4.
Anyway! This game, & this genre, is my go-to "I just got home from work and need to forcibly chill the fuck out after a miserable bus ride" evening activity ;)

I love logging my reading on Goodreads, as well as tracking "books I want to read in the future." I also love looking at other people's updates to see what they're reading. I am ribbonknight over there; my profile is here.

Lately I have been watching Veep, and am in the middle of season 5. Every episode makes me laugh, it pulls me out of every bad mood; I love it so much. ty to [personal profile] brdgt for having suggested it.
Young Pope ended up being too dark for me at the moment. This has happened to me a lot in the past few years with live-action TV.

Physically, my "happy place" is when I go Up North to where my family has a trailer on a lake, or when I go horseback riding on Chief. Fresh air, trees, open sky, a lack of buildings. So nice. If I had my way, I'd live in the middle of nowhere.
laceblade: Azusa offering piece of paper to the viewer, Ui in background holding cake (K-On: Azusa offer)
I think I've mostly seen this meme on Facebook, but others have posted it to Dreamwidth and so will I.

Matchbox 20, Yourself or Someone Like You
Third Eye Blind, Third Eye Blind [although Blue is now my fave of theirs]
Vertical Horizon, Everything You Want
Blink-182, Enema of the State
Linkin Park, Hybrid Theory
Green Day, Dookie
The Starting Line, Say It Like You Mean It
Fall Out Boy, Take This to Your Grave
Alanis Morissette, Jagged Little Pill
New Found Glory, Sticks and Stones

ALSO, I might be showing my youth here, but there are a lot of singles I got a hold of through of through a friend or etc. that were super meaningful to me even if I didn't have the full album. Example, Swing Swing by the All-American Rejects, as well as songs by Dashboard Confessional, Switchfoot, Lifehouse, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, The Ataris, etc.

Soundtracks were also a massive influence on me, probably moreso than half the albums on this list. These would include Les Miz, Everworld, Spider-Man 2, A Walk to Remember, MOULIN ROUGE, etc.

[personal profile] bibliofile: Are you watching any broadcast/cable tv these days?

As an overall response, not really, no.
We don't have cable. We do have an antenna, so we get basic channels, but all I ever watch is the PBS NewsHour, an occasional Packers game, and sometimes whatever's on PBS's Masterpiece Theater - looking forward to the premiere of Victoria this Sunday, for example.

Lately, if I'm watching TV, it's either through Netflix or Crunchyroll [the latter is basically Netflix for anime].

On Netflix, I recently watched The Crown. I'm still stalled through episodes of Jessica Jones because I find the show very intense and difficult for me to watch. [Whereas Daredevil goes really quickly because I find Charlie Cox VERY ATTRACTIVE.] Antoine and I have been watching Star Trek: The Next Generation together, very slowly. I'm also intermittent on the Pokemon anime series, Futurama, and probably some things I'm forgetting.

As for anime, last season I kept current with Yuri!!! on Ice and Sound! Euphonium, and then "Miss Bernard Says" at the end. I'm pretty behind on March Comes in Like a Lion, but trying to catch up now that it's in its second cour. I'm annoyed that Netflix got hold of Little Witch Academia, because now we have to wait until it's over before Netflix will drop the whole season in one go.
Other shows I intend to return to from last season include Izetta the Last Witch, Flip Flappers, Classicaloid, and Ninja Girl & Samurai Master.
Shows more than one season old that I'm working on are the third season of Sailor Moon Crystal, Love! Live! season 2, Record of Lodoss War [seeing if the VHS tapes are worth the shelf space!].

I've had a really hard time with this one, and I think that I have finally figured out why. I don't think I've ever walked back a bold/big decision that I've made.

Once I've committed to something, I'll go through hell to get that shit done.
Maybe I shouldn't? lol.

[personal profile] glass_icarus wrote, "Favorite female characters and why you love them? Any fandom :)"

SANTANA LOPEZ [Glee]
Not only is she half of my all-time favorite ship (Pezberry), but Santana is a sass-queen and a great singer to boot.
If you fell off the Glee wagon early (I certainly would not blame you), Santana was initially a sidekick character to Dianna Agron's white/blonde Quinn Fabray. Santana almost always appeared with Brittany, but it was usually Santana making the devastating one-liners as well as their characters' decisions. Because the show almost always presented Santana together with Brittany, they first presented a potential sexual relationship as a non-sequitur in a multi-party phone conversation - a joke that worked because of the other characters' surprised reactions.
But Naya Rivera wanted the camera on her at all times, and her background reactions in the choir room and in hallway scenes, usually hilarious as well as on-point, led her to bigger storylines, in part because she was one of the strongest actors on the show. [I'd say second only to Cory Monteith.] Her relationship with Brittany served as an opportunity to explore Santana's sexuality, and Rivera was there able to present a vulnerability that many fans latched on to.

In a show of self-centered teenagers, Santana is the one character who is always willing to GO THERE, to say what no one else will say. This was convenient for writers looking to push a plot forward, as well as viewers seeking vindication. She pointed out plot holes, hypocrisy, and uncomfortable truths. Even when the writing plummeted as the show continuously tried to take itself seriously for representing marginalized teenagers while also excorciating viewers for expecting anything but cutting comedy, Santana Lopez was reliably hilarious.

After having her vulnerability open her up, her character is also one of the few who has a clear progression on the show into self-acceptance and ability to love and care about other people. She learns how to have real, actual friends.

Many fic authors have given her the characterization and storylines that the show-runners never thought she deserved. She is my favorite character to write in A Song is a Weapon, and she's also my favorite character to read in this fandom.

Utena Tenjou [Revolutionary Girl Utena/Shoujo Kakumei Utena]
I'm not sure how accurate the translation was for the first sub I saw of this show, but when relaying the [first version of the] backstory, it said something like, "So impressed was she by him, that she decided to become a prince herself." This BLEW MY MIND. WHOA! A tiny girl gets saved by a prince AND THEREFORE DECIDES TO BECOME A PRINCE HERSELF. WHAT KIND OF AWESOME FUCKERY IS THIS.

Utena. Utena is that awesome. Her pink hair, her refusal to take sass, her tenacity in telling Anthy Himemiya that she's in a fucked up situation and no matter how many other people think it's just fine, it's really not okay.

I want to be Utena. I aspire to her chivalry.

Tifa Lockhart [Final Fantasy VII]
You spend the first half of the game knowing that Tifa's Cloud's childhood friend, but in the second half it's revealed that since before the start of the game she's been holding back the truth and waiting to see what happens because she knows Cloud ought to be dead, and she's not sure if the protag you're playing as is really him, or a clone - if her memories are real, or fake. This reveal is one of the biggest WTF moments in video game history, but it also gives Tifa some real depth that often gets glossed over in FF7 fandom.

In addition to that, she runs her own bar in the Sector 7 slums, and allows it to be the secret headquarters for a terrorist organization dedicated to taking down an environment-destroying corporation that's responsible for the death of her father as well as burning her hometown to the ground.

At the age of 15, she picked up Sephiroth's own sword and tried to get her revenge even though she had to have known there was no way she could succeed. And after that, after recovering from her wounds and re-learning her martial arts skills, she joins AVALANCHE to work on getting revenge in the long-term. She's supportive, she's brave, and at a point of high drama in the game, she chooses to stay by Cloud when he's incapacitated and take a break from saving the world. It's a selfish choice, and I kind of love her for it. She refuses to give up on Cloud's hopeless ass throughout the game. I was first drawn to Tifa because I over-identified with her for falling in love with her childhood friend, but I've stayed a devoted fan because of her complexity and strength.

Something I hate: Elections, lately. Nothing but bad news in Wisconsin, and the ideas our esteemed governor keeps churning out are so absurd that even GOP legislators have been releasing negative statements. I can only hope that some of them will have the gall to stand up and amend some of this crap.

Something I love: Employment? There's the intangible thing of having health care coverage and decent benefits, as well as a good salary. I also love my job. There are so many things to learn, and I'm surrounded by so many intelligent people. I feel engaged, and like I am growing. In the mornings, I am almost always eager to go to work.

Somewhere I've been: Eagle River. A town up in northern Wisconsin. This is one of the places my parents and I would drive when we were Up North for two weeks every summer, when we got bored.

Somewhere I'd like to go: England. I've read so many books taking place there that I feel like I just really should before I die, you know?

Someone I know: There's an E who's a new coworker with whom I get along pretty well. Yesterday she was having heartburn, so I shared one of my papaya enzyme pills, and she was kind of astounded by how well it worked.

A film I like: Ever After. My friends and I watched this so often at sleepovers that I'm pretty confident I could quote the whole thing.

If you would like a letter just ask in the comments!

from [personal profile] jesse_the_k - "Your fashion role models, influencers, cheerleaders, or hell the worst pair of shoes you've ever owned."

I'm having a hard time with this one because I don't feel like I have a personal style. I spent most of high school in jeans and hoodies. Since being an unpaid intern, I've had to build up a wardrobe of business casual, but I don't consider it very fashionable.

I have a hard time finding things that fit me. Until Torrid opened in Green Bay, I couldn't find any lace/nice florals (which I've liked forever) in a size that actually accommodated my bust.

I hate clothes shopping because as a kid I spent a lot of time being unable to fit into things I wanted, unable to shop in all the stores my friends did.

I don't know about role models - I like seeing what Lea Michele is wearing, or Olivia Pope on Scandal. A few other celebrities. But none of these people share my body type, so idk that I'd say I try to copy their fashion.
I guess probably other women in my life - my sister and cousins-in-law & cousins are good at putting together outfits, as are most of the women I work with.

[personal profile] j00j asked for religious community, as in community of laypeople moreso than a religious order or etc. This post meanders a lot & I'm not sure I addressed what you wanted me to, so sorry ^^;;;

Back in high school, a woman at the church named Carrie took my friend Ryan, my friend Heather's sister Rachel, & a dude named Andy who was in another school system on a trip to a place called St. Meinrad in Indiana. St. Meinrad is a Benedictine monastery, & they had a liturgical youth conference every year.
The four of them came back & wanted to start performing youth liturgies. Some of my friends & a few other intelligent/talented people joined a group that we self-dubbed, for lack of a better term, Youth Liturgy.
We planned masses: the music, who did the readings, etc. We wrote the petitions.
We acted out the gospel. We delivered homilies ourselves or assisted the priests in delivering them (and when local Catholics called out this practice in the diocesan newspaper, I wrote letters back).
For Pentecost one year, we lit the baptismal font on fire. For Palm Sunday, we did stuff from Jesus Christ Superstar.
We made programs, and two members would draw art for the covers. I still have some of Jenny's up on my bulletin board - they were beautiful.

For the music, Carrie's son Matt led us, & the choir we created was called "Youth Liturgy."
The liturgies themselves were great. We'd close every mass by singing "Carry Your Candle" & walking out with candles.

But we did other stuff, too.
I met with our youth minister & two older/slightly more popular kids to try & create a youth group that met weekly. We called ourselves "The Quest."
We cleaned out the youth space & tried to get more of it.
I went to St. Meinrad myself one summer, and Lindsey/Ryan/I went to Notre Dame another summer for a different conference.
We had mission trips in Washington, DC and in Milwaukee, which focused on doing work (and not evanglization).
When the people in my grade (the biggest % of youth liturgy people - me, Lindsey, Jennifer, Heather, Kristy, etc.) graduated, we had a retreat at the Abbey, which was really nice.

We infiltrated a bunch of the standing committees in our parish so that our concerns would be heard. I don't remember what anybody else joined, but mine was the Worship Committee, which controled the art/environment aspects of church - banners, cloths used on the altar, whether the lady who was slightly off the deep end could put up her bigass picture of the Divine Mercy.

It's hard to describe what made this group special. A large chunk of people were already my friends (and joined b/c I joined first).
Some people (Carrie, Tom, Colin, etc.) were people I respected the hell out of, & still do.
Matt's suicide undoubtedly tied us in a way that only tragedy can.
But mostly, we just talked, about everything. It's a fine balance, in talking about faith, needing to be creative together, sometimes acting with one another, etc.
People were excited to come to our masses.
I didn't realize until later what a big deal being permitted to be involved in delivering the homilies actually was.

Putting it all together like this, it was sort of a how-to on getting involved in a bureaucratic structure & forcing it to listen to a group of people who felt ignored.
When I go to mass now, every aspect of the liturgy makes me think about the time I spent with my friends, our own preferences for different aspects of the liturgy, etc.

In college, I attended mass at St. Paul's at the campus end of State Street. Almost my first day there I met James, some kind of liturgical minister who also sang well. He took me out for dinner at Chin's one night, and after telling him all about Youth Liturgy, I agreed to write the intercessions for weekend masses - I did this weekly for all four years.
While living in the dorms my first two years, I walked to church with Paul, a guy I was friends with from high school. Paul and I disagreed on almost every aspect of the liturgy - he'd prefer mass be said in Latin with the priest facing away from the pews. Still, we had a similar sense of humor and had to try hard to not smirk at one another when things went wrong during mass.

In the second two years at St. Paul's, a committee was formed so that disparate groups of people responsible for different parts of mass could meet and talk - thus, I was invited.
This was my first time meeting people other than James.
I don't remember the controversies or topics discussed, except that I felt like an outsider. These people's entire social lives revolved around St. Paul's, and mine didn't.
Everyone else's opinion of me solidified when I expressed my opinion about lector training, which Paul and I had just gone through. (I liked reading aloud.) I said that I had felt turned off by our trainers talking about their personal faith relationships with God - I had come to be trained, not for a spiritual retreat. The training was very long due to this, and I had homework to do.
I phrased my feedback as nicely as possible, but I could tell I'd hurt this girl's feelings. Since everyone else was friends with her, I felt like people were pretty cold toward me after that.

I know that I would have been able to speak frankly at Youth Liturgy about something like this. I do like talking about faith with people when I expect to do it.
But yeah. I need people who think about what they're doing and are willing to talk about aspects of the liturgy/trainings/whatever that they take for granted. This is a thing that often disappoints me in most groups of people, though.

After college, I defriended most of these people on Facebook over the next couple years due to their semi-evangelical and/or misinformed political posts.

While living in my efficiency on Hancock Street, I attended St. Patrick's downtown. I tried attending a Catholic feminism group, which is thoroughly documented in this post.
The group of women weren't actually feminists. I eventually left that parish because the priest is about as conservative as our bishop.
Even while I still identified pro-life, I found his constant homilies on abortion insufferable.

I now drive across the city to attend mass in a parish that feels - in its 1970s construction and homillies - like my home parish did when I was in high school [it doesn't feel home-like THERE any more because of the crappy priests they've gotten lately]. I peruse the bulletin whenever I'm there, but all activities surround food.
There's a chronic pain group in which I'd been interested, but they meet during the work day.
I'm leery of making friends - would they be judgmental upon finding out I live with my non-Christian boyfriend?
I also ignored it for a couple years while learning to cope with chronic pain and a few spin-offs from that.
I feel like I have my shit together now, though, so I'm still looking.
I've been considering seeing about volunteering at the Catholic Multicultural Center, which my parish now runs after the bishop abruptly and inexplicably cut funds and shut it down.

There are other things I'd like to look into more, too, like Call to Action, etc.

Overall...I'm really lucky to have had the community I did growing up in my church - the circles of friends I had in general growing up, I know that I'm really lucky.

I'm still trying to find ways to recreate that now.
It's more difficult when you're older and aware of politics, etc. In high school, most of the Catholic-esque politics went over my head.

And amusingly now, most of us who were in Youth Liturgy together have pretty radical beliefs about the Church, and are mildly "heretical" in our thoughts on social teachings, etc.

Since the point of this post is to be part of a user-content-generated meme, I'm going to say that I'm more open to questions than usual.

Whether you participate in the love meme or not, just wanted to say that I <3 all of you and I'm always glad to read your comments on my entries.

9. Tell me about your default icon.

I change default icons all the time, which is why I freak out when WisCon rolls around and I need to pick one by which people can identify me.

This is Satsuki from My Neighbor Totoro, looking for her sister Mei. I think it's a pretty gorgeous icon, I love the grass, the sky, the lighting.

10. Pick 10 random icons from your userpics and tell me about them.

This is from one of the windows at St. Norbert Abbey, icon made by me. Their windows are gorgeous, you can look at pictures of them here, or better yet go there.
The text is what Jesus said when dying on the cross.

I can't figure out if this is official or fanart of Korra, who will be the star of the next animated Avatar series. In the full-version of the image, she's clasping hands with the spirit!Aang - he's the white that's reflected in her eyes.

Icon made by me, art by Japanese fanartist, her site is here. This is Sailor Moon, but in the Princess transformation outfit from the live-action show (Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon). Because in this transformation, she gets a fucking sword.

Sailor Venus, mid-transformation sequence. Text says: "Henshin: To change or transform." I like this a lot. Henshin sequences are common in anime series about magical school girls. I also like using it when I'm posting about self-improvement or etc.

From the John Adams mini-series. I loved this mini-series, especially the dude playing Thomas Jefferson.
Text:
Alexander Hamilton: AND I SAID, "LET'S ALL BE FEDERALISTS"
Thomas Jefferson: AND I WAS ALL, "DEMOCRATIC REPUBLICANS IS SUCH A KICK ASS NAME."
Alexander Hamilton: I WAS LIKE OH SNAP WE ARE TEH POLITICAL PARTIES
Thomas Jefferson (smirking): LOL OUR BAD
George Washington (intense frown): DAMN KIDS

Mai of Avatar: The Last Airbender, with throwing knife. Because Mai is a badass who rescues her boyfriend even when he is a dumbass.

Albus Dumbledore/Grindewald from Harry Potter. Because it is the single time in my life that I saw the subtext, joined the LJ comm, and then had it confirmed by the author. VINDICATION. [Also, I totally missed a pairing in Game of Thrones, so this makes me feel better.]

Zack and Cloud escaping from Mako tubes in Final Fantasy VII. Because in FF7, you find out halfway through that the protagonist is an unreliable narrator and everything is THROWN TO SHIT AND IT IS AMAZING.

Because Tifa Lockhart (of FF7) is probably my favorite character of all time. I have a poster of her on my wall. ....And four figurines.

From Sailor Moon: Minako and Usagi (Sailors Venus and Moon) in their civilian high school uniforms, giggling 'til tears come out the corners of their eyes.

I think I saw this meme from [livejournal.com profile] telcontar and [livejournal.com profile] tigrin

List 10 whatever # [livejournal.com profile] mystickeeper feels like of your favorite characters from different fandoms, and ask people to spot patterns in your choices, and if they're so inclined, to draw conclusions about you based on the patterns they've spotted.

Angel -- Wesley Wyndam-Pryce
Buffy -- Buffy Summers
Veronica Mars -- Veronica Mars, Logan Echolls
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles -- EVERYONE
The West Wing -- Joshua Lyman
Lord of the Rings -- Frodo
Neon Genesis Evangelion -- Asuka Langley Sohryu, Misato Katsuragi
Harry Potter -- Harry
Final Fantasy VII -- Tifa Lockhart
Honey & Clover -- Ayumi Yamada
How I Met Your Mother -- Robin Sparkles Scherbatsky
Avatar: The Last Airbender -- Katara, until she sucked; then Toph
Revolutionary Girl Utena -- Utena Tenjou, Juri Arisagawa
Final Fantasy Tactics -- Agrias [one time there was a favorite character meme and [livejournal.com profile] carabbit guessed that Agrias was my favorite from this game, and I was like, no! But then I realized SHE WAS TOTALLY RIGHT.], Ramza, Alma
Star Wars Expanded Universe -- Jaina Solo, Tenel Ka [keep in mind that I'm about a decade behind in these books]
Sailor Moon -- Rei Hino (Sailor Mars)
Black Lagoon - Revy
Dawson's Creek - Joey Potter

My vote: I'm pretty sure almost all of them suffer from PTSD. I don't, so I'm not sure what this says about me.
I guess a lot of them also can't be with the person they love. Merp-merrr.
