I think that my favorite Christmas songs tend to be the darker ones, or at least the ones with spookier melodies. I enjoy "What Child Is This?" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is probably my favorite.

Anyway, my family has celebrated Christmas Eve. We went to mass, and saw my niece Olivia sing in the children's choir. Afterwards, the family assembled at my sister's home for hors d'eourves, dinner, present-opening, etc. On Christmas Eve, we always take the kids into one of the bedrooms, and read the story about the birth of Jesus from a children's Bible. For whatever reason, my mom had left the children's Bible in the car, so I was given a regular Bible. Read the passages about the birth of Jesus from Luke. From Matthew. (Do Mark and John not have them? Or could I just not find them?) Finally, I just kept reading, and Jesus was giving the Sermon on the Mount by the time Santa finished delivering presents downstairs. Which was good, because, you know, eventually the story of Jesus isn't really a "OMG, be excited and happy, children!" story. Well, it is. But it isn't. You know what I mean.

I was even able to run to the library this morning, while doing all of my other errands. I now have some more manga to read, and DVDs to watch. I also received some from Santa Claus...Santa got me the omnibus edition of Magic Knight Rayearth, bwahaha (vol. 1-3 in one book). Which is cool. I also just used a coupon to get the Tsubasa Chronicle omnibus (again, 3 volumes in one). That's a pretty awesome deal, yo! I'd get the xxxHolic one, too, but I already own volumes 1 and 2. Oh yeah! Santa gave me the Whisper of the Heart DVD, so now people need to watch it with me, because it's so good and I love it! I've received nice things this year, and Christmas isn't even over yet.

Tomorrow will be my family's rendition of Christmas, Part II: More Screaming Children.

Merry Christmas, etc. to all.

I seem to be plowing through Libba Bray's Rebel Angels fairly quickly, so hopefully soon I can write about books and comics again. Because I know you're all dying to know what I think about them, :)

Soon, I will leave my house and go to ShopKo. If any of you are home, do feel free to visit me! I'll be there from 11am until 8:30pm. It will be hilarious. I guess the store has some kind of new "savings" cards that I'm supposed to pimp from my register? OR NOT.

Presumably, I will have an hour-long break (hopefully) about in the middle, so don't come then. Also, do feel free to call up Antoine, who will be in my house, either reading or doing math problems from his math book. I did not think that such people existed - people who, after graduating, and getting a nice job, continue to do math in their free time. But Antoine is one of these people.

Last night around 9pm, we saw people in tents and underneath mountains of blankets outside Circuit City and Best Buy. Who are these people?

I did some shopping myself yesterday! Right after the Packer game, so we were pretty much the only people inside the store, except for those who had been watching football on the HDTV. I got a purse, a belt, and the second season of Buffy on DVD, all of which are on sale. If anyone needs cheap Buffy, they have full seasons at ShopKo for $16.99! I think it goes through Saturday, if you're avoiding stores today.

The holiday at my sister's house was nice. I am a bit upset that leftovers will be had for dinner there tonight, and Antoine will get some and I will not. Also, WTF is up with us arriving at my sister's, four people through the door at once, and all my nieces and nephew say is, "ANT-WOHN! ANT-WOHN!" HELLO, I AM YOUR AUNT, KTHX.

I am home now!

Yesterday was quite full. In the morning, I finished my horrible paper, and then went to campus to turn it in. I then returned books to Memorial Library, picked up lunch, returned books to the public library, sent out some Bookmooch books at the post office, and then went to work.

There were only about five of us at work, so it was a bit different. I then grabbed a bus, grabbed my car, and drove out to Verona to pick up Antoine from work. We stopped back at the house for Chad, packed up everybody's stuff, and set out. Unfortunately, right when we started driving, it started snowing. At first it wasn't too bad, but it kept getting really bad. Visibility was so bad that we stayed on 151 until Fon du Lac, because I was afraid that without a car right in front of me, I wouldn't be able to stay on the road. Once we got past Oshkosh or so, the storm stopped, and visibility was okay once more. The boys slept when it was the worst, but my mp3 player kept me focused!

We got home around 8:00 or so. Chatted with my parents a bit, and then walked over to my friend Lindsey's house, and got to see Heather, Laura, and Jennifer as well. I haven't seen most of them in a long time, so it was nice to spend time with them.

Anyway, I need to go put on makeup and figure out what (if any) homework I can get through today, before we go over to my sister's house. My mom's sister had five children, all of whom are over the age of 40, and most of whom now have families of three children. Add in Julie's in-laws, children, my parents, and Antoine and I, and....well, we eat family meals in 3 shifts. The only thing I'm dreading about the holiday is being unable to answer "So what are you doing after you graduate?" 15 times.

I don't know what it is about my Brit Lit class that just utterly kills me, but it does. I remember having a horrible time writing my first paper, and I have been this time, too. It's due Wednesday at 5pm. My original goal was to have it done to turn in today during discussion, but that didn't happen. Then, my goal was to turn it in tomorrow during lecture. But I don't think that's going to happen, either. Tonight I have a complete draft and a solid(ish) thesis, but now I'd prefer to be able to edit it tomorrow.

My part-time job in the town where my parents live was working in a retail store. And I'll be returning there the day after Thanksgiving....for one day only! But I called them to find out what my hours are...since I haven't worked since January, they didn't want me early in the morning (ie, no waking up at 4am for me, SWEET). BUT, they put me down for working 11am to 8:30pm! Grrr.....I get a 1-hour break, but whatever. My employers expect that I will use this hour to go and shop in the store. Instead, I will run across the street and read manga in large, plushie chairs. Working the day after Thanksgiving isn't all that bad. It's the only day of the year our store ever schedules enough people, and they usually give us free Subway sandwiches and cookies. WHICH IS COOL WITH ME!
Still, I'm bringing Antoine home with me for the holiday, and he will need something to do. Poor Antoine, :( Let us pity him, and the possibility that he might have to spend all 9.5 hours with my family.

Beowulf
First of all, seeing this was fun, because I went with my friends Gretchen, Jaci, Jaci's boyfriend Tim, and Sandy. Also, it was fun BECAUSE WE SAW IT IN 3D. The entire movie was in 3D! It was so awesome.

I enjoyed the movie more than I thought I would. I feel like the animation looked better in the movie than it did in the preview. People's skin had very fine hairs on it, like on the outside of Beowulf's nose. Extremely detailed. Animation of the horses was very weak, and the fabrics on people's bodies was weird. But overall, the animation was quite beautiful.

The feel of the Anglo-Saxons was totally awesome - burping, drinking, sexing, and above all - bragging like no tomorrow.

As for the story itself? Well, a lot was changed. And because I am an English major, I have Things to Say About That )

I will be so glad when this paper is done. Never mind that I have three more to work on....

The Fourth of July
Okay, so in my rush to slap a blog post up, I totally forgot to blog about my Fourth of July activities, which is sad because it was so much fun!

Firstly, I didn't have to work, so that was cool. And Antoine didn't have to work, either! He came to my house and we started a Final Fantasy V game.

Then we joined some of my fellow pages/friends on the lawns of the Capitol for Concerts on the Square: Special Nation's Birthday Edition. They had some fifties-ish music, but also played the 1812 Orchestra AND SHOT CANNONS. I WAS SO EXCITED. One of my co-workers made some amazing sandwiches, and the rest of us brought things like potato salad and chips and brownies and goodness (and yes, we ate the leftovers all day Thursday).

THEN, after Concerts on the Square was done, we went inside the Capitol and, after tidying up, went upstairs and outside to the Observation Deck, which surrounds the entire Capitol. We could see fireworks being set off from about four different towns surrounding Madison, and it was amazing (also, some illegal ones being set off inside the city limits!). The sun had gone down by that point, so the temperature was nice, too - especially on the north side, where you could feel the wind. Also, on the Observation Deck, we're right beneath the giant Greco-Roman statues that are up there, so that was awesome, too.

Right before we left, we went inside and up a little bit more to the Trumpters' Balcony, which goes around the circumference of the Rotunda inside the Capitol. We were much closer to the mural that's up on the very top, and could also see the beautiful marble floor and pillars, tiled mosaics, and portraits of all four floors of the Capitol at once. So awesome. It was a very nice Fourth of July.

Saturday
My family came down to visit me, which included both of my parents, my sister Julie, her husband Kevin, and their 3 children: Olivia, Dylan, and Amelia.

They arrived around 9:30am, and the first thing we did (after showing them my room) was go to the Farmers Market. It was insufferably hot outside yesterday, and my family, parents especially, don't do well in heat. We made it halfway around Capitol Square and then went inside to walk around. My sisters children were very pleased with the incredibly beautiful Capitol, considering it to be an upgrade from my previous job at ShopKo. I love walking around inside the Capitol, but truth be told, it makes me a little sick. I can think of a lot better use for taxes than marble floors and oak paneling.

After that, we picked up Antoine and drove out to McDonald's for lunch (when there are lots of people, cheaper is better!). From there, we went to Half-Price Books (OMF, I got a volume of manga for $2; WIN), and then to Trader Joe's. I think that overall, the family was impressed with both stores, although they didn't buy much. I came out of Trader Joe's with food that will get me through most of the week, and also a new plant. I've kept my Lucky Bamboo alive for like, 4 months now, so now I have a new one. I like the idea of plants in rooms, but I also like it more when they're alive.

After Trader Joe's, everyone was tired and hot, so we came back to my house and watched some of a Harry Potter movie that was on TV, while I followed Amelia and Dylan upstairs to my room and tried to persuade them that it wasn't necessary to touch all of my things.

We ate dinner at Ella's Deli on my family's way out of town, and Olivia, Dylan, and Amelia enjoyed two rides on the carousel. Saying goodbye wasn't very sad, because this coming weekend, I am going home. So, friends from high school take note! I will be home the 13-15, and will definitely be up for doing something Friday after dinner.

I did end up going to see "Paprika" with Antoine, Creighton, Carolyn, Kristen, Louise, and other various people from Anime Club at the new Sundance Theatre. It was...amazing. Very trippy, ridiculously well-animated (really, I couldn't even believe some of it), great music, interesting premise, and masterfully executed, as is usual with works done by Satoshi Kon. Highly recommended!

Of course, afterward, everybody came over to our house. I struggled to stay awake, but eventually just came upstairs and crawled into bed,

Harry Potter
Hey, did you guys know that J.K. Rowling has confirmed that the bartender at the Hog's Head is Dumbledore's brother, Aberforth? I hadn't! Yay.

Anyway, everything else contains SPOILERS FOR BOOK 6, THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE. If you are one of those people who only watches the movies and doesn't read the books, then, well, what the hell is the matter with you. The books are 80,000,000 times better. Anyway.

Why Snape is not evil )

Sometime before Book 7 is released, I'll put up a list of all the things I think will happen, or just what I want to happen before the end. I really love being around as this fandom has evolved over time. I never wrote fanfiction or anything, but just reading the news online and discussing the books with both my friends from school and with people all over the world through the Internet has been amazing. I'll be sad when it's over.

Thank you to Kristen and Dave for advice on how to fix my computer. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have time to try and do that. Today I was literally gone from my house from 7:30am until 12:00am, with some 10 minutes at home in between to retrieve my car. Ughhhh, I'm so tired.

Tonight, I registered for WisCon. Kristen and Gretchen, if you're going, you should register now - the website says that the spots are almost filled! I also signed up to volunteer. Maybe I'll meet cool people? We'll see.

I don't really know what I'm going to do for my birthday this year, so if anyone has any suggestions, let me know. I'm not going to the Gritty. It just sucks - I want to do stuff with my Green Bay friends, but they'll all not be here, and my Madison friends will soon leave for the summer. :/ I liked birthdays more when I was a kid and they were exciting.

That's right. Herein lies a list of everything (I think!) I read and watched over winter break. I guess there's not as much as I thought there was. Oh well. I'm in the midst of the novel Snow Crash right now, which is pretty awesome. Also, I'll be reading a crapload this semester for all of my awesome classes. Anyway, here we go:

Things I Watched )

Updation

First off: In my boredom, I've found a new TV show to watch! NBC has all 11 episodes of "Heroes" available streaming on their website. I guess we know what my new obsession will be! Last year it was Battlestar, and the year before that, Grey's. Now, Heroes! It looks pretty cool. The website also has supplementary comics to go with the show!

New Year's Eve
New Year's Eve was a good time! Jennifer finally returned from her Tennessee/Michigan travels, and we gathered at Kristy's house for the Packer game and The Office. OMF, watching Brett Favre was the saddest thing EVER. I don't really care about professional sports very much....I used to be really into football when I was 8, until I was about 11 or so, but now I don't really care about it too much unless I'm at a game (be it Packers or Badgers). Still, though, my parents have always lived in Green Bay, and until college, so did I. It's kind of scary how fanatical people get about the Packers here.....but I guess it's better than a sadistic religious cult or something.
Anyway! New Year's Eve was full of good food, good friends, hilarious episodes from The Office season 2, and me periodically blowing my noise-maker to wake up Kristy, who kept falling asleep on the couch. I was pretty giggly, and I didn't even have any alcohol! I think I was just really happy because I got to talk to Antoine for a while, :)

Do I have anything else to talk about except for anime and manga? Of course not! Okay, so here we go!

Kiki's Delivery Service
I found this at the library, and rented it to watch with my sister's children. Unfortunately, they had to go home after we ate dinner (we were at my parent's house), so I still need to go over there some time this week and watch the last 40 minutes. I finished it by myself because I couldn't wait, bwahaha!

I don't know why, but I was expecting this movie to focus a lot on magic and fantasy storylines. I guess that makes sense, as the main character happens to be a witch. I should know better by now, that with movies made by Studio Ghibli, these will never be the focus of the films. The plot centers on Kiki, a 13-year-old witch setting out for her mandatory 1-year term of making it on her own in a city she's never been to before. It is a coming of age story, with themes of friendship and adolescent romance thrown in as well. I watched the English dub partly so that I could watch it with Olivia, Dylan, and Amelia, but also because I really prefer watching anime dubbed when the English dub is good - unfortunately, it rarely is. Kirsten Dunst starred as Kiki, and Debbie Reynolds, Phil Hartman, Matthew Lawrence, and Janeane Garofalo also contributed their voice talents to the cast.

My nieces and nephew haven't watched the last 40 minutes yet, but from what they saw, they liked it. This was their 2nd film that was worked on by Hayao Miyazaki, though, and Mia especially had problems with the fact that although the drawings of the people looked similar to those of My Neighbor Totoro, they were, in fact, an entirely different cast. I will admit that Kiki looks a lot like Satsuki, from My Neighbor Totoro. Mia kept asking, "Where is her little sister?! Why is she not here?!" Eventually, though, I think she understood it was a totally different story.

I loved this movie, and I think it's up there as one of my favorite Studio Ghibli movies. I think the only one I haven't really cared for so far was Castle in the Sky.

Pretear
I really don't care for this anime. At all. It looked cute and original, promising to be a "modern retelling of Snow White," but it's really a story that's full of anime cliches. I gave it a chance for 2 episodes. I watched 3-5 on fast-forward. The series got more interesting in the second DVD, but it is still not "good." It seemed cool at first, with the elements borrowed from Cinderella and Snow White, but it wasn't. It is a story that has been done many times: this girl suddenly discovers that she is "the Pretear," and has magical powers to fight against a random enemy. She is joined by 7 boys that we know nothing about! One of them is broody/angsty, and gets close-ups of his face when he says something mean to the protagonist! They fight against weird ugly monsters! One of her step-sisters has "amusing hijinks" and the other one is angsty and susceptible to being attacked!
Also, I find her transformation sequence and "joining" with her male friends to be pretty creepy.
I don't recommend this anime at all! Don't waste your time - seriously, Sailor Moon is better in all departments except for animation quality. Unfortunately, I still have 4 episodes to go. I watched this much, I might as well get some closure. I'm not doing much else these days, :)
laceblade: (Default)
....and I do swear that at some point, I'll upload pictures of amusing presents I received for you all to look at. A lot of people on my LiveJournal friends list have posted lists of everything they got for Christmas. I didn't really ask for anything specific, but I've received useful things, funny things, and a couple random books that I wasn't expecting, but still love.

I know that I haven't blogged in a while, but I guess I really haven't had that much to say. I almost blogged Tuesday night after a very rage-related incident at the part-time job I have in a store, but common sense prevailed at the last second, and I didn't post it.

Life is stagnant here at home. Seeing people I haven't seen in a long time is nice, but overall, life is insufferably boring. I work a few days per week at my job - I'm grateful to get money (my wage isn't much, but it's something), so thus far I've been able to handle my infrequent shifts. I've been reading a lot and watching some anime, and peppering most nights with spending time with high school friends or family (or both). It's really nice to stay in my pajamas until 2:00 pm, which is what I'm doing right now. I've also been trying to figure out the status of this internship I'm trying to get for next semester. We'll see what happens, but I'm pretty determined, so hopefully things work out.

I watched the first 4 episodes of the anime series Haibane Renmei with Ryan and Dave, and all three of us were unimpressed. Still, I had rented all 4 DVDs from the library and I've since finished the 13-episode series by myself. It did redeem itself in that the characters became interesting enough that I cared about that. The plot is essentially a story about salvation and friendship. The art style is nice, too. Overall, I liked the series, but not enough to go out of my way to recommend it to friends. Watch it if you get the chance, but there are much better series out there.

The 32nd episode of the anime NANA was subbed, so I've seen that. However, in the last couple of episodes, a new plot line has been introduced that has made things almost disgustingly melodramatic. I'm too attached to both the characters and the music to abandon the series now, so I'm really hoping that it will redeem itself. Still, I adored the series up until this point, and would recommend both it and its manga counterpart to anyone looking to start up something new.

Also, I'm closing in on the anime series about the French Revolution, Rose of Versailles, so look for a more detailed synopsis of that once it's over! I enjoy watching it, and I learn about French history at the same time! It's a win.

Anyway, I'm off to take a shower now. Perhaps afterward, I'll be active enough to change my sheets, go to the bank, peruse some book stores, and stop in by some places that sell used DVDs and check for anime. Of course, I could also lay on the couch and watch more Sailor Moon, or finish my book. We'll see, ;)
laceblade: (Default)
I keep forgetting to cross-post in here when I write in my blog, so I'm posting this the morning after I wrote it, hohoho!

I'm in the middle of 4 good books, and only one of them is a manga.
I'm so full I feel like I could die by sheer force of will.
This is the first Christmas I've ever had where I haven't had to ask myself, "Wow, I wonder if this holiday would feel different if I knew there was someone who cared about me in a way that isn't familial nor friendship."
All in all, it's been a badass Christmas.

And, I just shared a decent conversation with my 'slightly' intoxicated brother, who is home from Los Angeles, which went like this:
"What's that scythe over there from?" (he points to the plastic scythe next to my dresser)
"Halloween, freshmen year. Back in the good old days before they started charging admission to get on to State Street on Halloween."
"What?"
"Now, on Halloween, they charge $5 for someone to get on State Street."
"They can't do that. It isn't legal."
"I know. It sucks."
"Get some balls, Jackie. Fight the system. That's what I did when I went to school there." He walks away in disgust.

I fail....except when it comes to fighting the system so as to procure a room in which Anime Club can conduct its business, :D

Here is the Christmas BSG thing I mentioned the other day....I figure that you guys will only watch it if you don't have to travel anywhere on the internets. Watch it, it's funny!

Also, what is up with people becoming almost combative when they start interrogating me on what I'm going to do with my majors after I graduate. Is it any of your business whether or not it's a "real" job?! I swear, most of the time, the only reason I want to be "successful" is so that I can answer questions like these with an air of superiority and say, "Yeah, you frickin' frick, that's right. Anything else you want to know?!"

'Cause that's what Christmas is all about.
laceblade: (Default)
I really don't understand the hype surrounding Barack Obama. I mean, he seems pretty cool. But, the man gave one good speech at the Democratic National Convention, and it hasn't really done much since then (aside from almost completing his....first term as a senator! The guy has no experience! I don't know. We'll see what happens. The 2008 election will be interesting, if nothing else.

Also, someone has created a very amusing Christmas greeting about the origin of Santa Claus, and setting it to the music and (altered) text of the opening of Battlestar Galactica. It is here, and you should watch it even if you don't watch BSG, because it is amusing.

Anyway, I should go. Mom becomes upset if I sit down for more than 5 minutes, and wants me to do things like fold stray blankets. Also, Dad is making me vacuum the stairs! OMF, Christmas Eve at our house! I should probably shower before we go to mass at 4:00 pm. EVEN THOUGH Catholics are supposed to go to church twice this weekend - once for the 4th week of Advent (you should've gone yesterday afternoon or this morning) and then again for Christmas (tomorrow/tonight), I'm only going once. But, can I say that sleeping in today for the first time in a very, very long time was SO nice? Because it was. I really hope that Jesus understands. If I had had another 'first day all semester to sleep in,' then I would have gone twice.
laceblade: (Default)
The holiday weekend was a whirlwind of activity, but it's now over.
On Friday, I went in for work at ShopKo at 4:30 am. The store that I work at is one of the smaller versions of the chain. Despite this, we still had a crapload of business on Friday, even compared to last year. Last year, there were 11 people standing in line to swarm the door when it was unlocked. This year, one of my managers lost count at 180.
Saturday was similar in that I went in at 6:00, and the store was having a 6-hour sale. For the first two hours, there were practically no customers and nothing to do. After that, though, there weren't enough people working and it was just awful.

I sort of regret working because it made me insufferably crabby both Friday and Saturday nights (Seriously, on Saturday night, I fell asleep at Buffalo Wild Wings despite being at a table with 10 other people and 10 football games on various surrounding TVs). Still, making money is nice.

Antoine brought his Nintendo Wii with us, and I started a game of Zelda: Legend of Twilight. I think it's a lot of fun. Luckily, Antoine does too, because that's what occupied his waking hours while I was working, :)

We ate lots of good food - at my relative's on Thanksgiving, ordering from Kroll's, and food made by my mom. My mom is almost retired - how weird is that! She only has 3 shifts left at the hospital, and then she'll be done for good. It's really weird to think about.

It was nice to spend time with my family and my friends, :)

I felt really disgusting yesterday - probably from a weekend of eating too much. I've started today to keep track of what I'm eating again, and hopefully this point-system will help me out a lot.

I do have to say that coming back to Madison this time, it really felt like coming home. It's strange to think that Green Bay doesn't feel like home any more. Well, that's not entirely true. It feels like home, but a home I've outgrown, like how when I take out my old dolls or toys, they still make me smile, but I'm ready for something else.

I need to start preparing for my next American Lit paper (hopefully it's not due next Monday, but I think it might be? Frickin' A) and preparing for exams, but at least for today and probably tomorrow, my time will be occupied by catching up in all of my readings.
