Pirates!

I felt like using my Juri icon. *strokes it*

Can I please gush about how much I absolutely loved "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest?!"

The first half hour dragged. But all of a sudden, I got swept up in it again, and it was most brilliant. This is what a true pirate movie should be. Knives clenched in teeth, a barroom brawl,

I LOVED the witch. She was a witch, right? Whatever. I absolutely adored her. Favorite character.

I really liked the line when Sparrow brought the cage out and said, "Look, we brought you a present. Undead monkey." UNDEAD MONKEY! The thought is so amusing. When I was walking in the parking lot with my friends afterward, I declared aloud, "I want an undead monkey!" They laughed and said, "You WOULD."

I hated Norrington in the first movie. He is surprisingly hot when without his wig, and when dirty.

I was really surprised by the angst at the end, with Elizabeth betraying Jack, and Will seeing them make out. I love these movies - they're fun, amusing, and intriguing, but the first one didn't really have much depth of character. So, that really was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting to be annoyed by Will in this movie, and I wasn't at all.

Oh! And Davie Jones? BRILLIANT. I started cackling when they showed him at his ridiculous organ, particularly when we learned he played it with his tentacles. I loved all of his ship's crew, really. I loved how dark this movie was. Violent for children, yes. I loved how CREEPY it was. When the bearded pirate from Jack's ship was telling the stories - so good. And how disgusting the crew was, especially Will's father. DELIGHTFULLY disgusting!

3-way sword fight?! BRILLIANT! I also really loved that Elizabeth got to kick ass in this movie - both in a literal way, knocking people's heads and fighting with swords, and also in the doing-something-dirty-to-save-Will way.

That's what I love the most about these movies, is the dialogue. It is SO GOOD. Perfectly accurate from the time, and differently suited to each character. It's great. The dialogue is what makes it for me, really. I love it more than I loved everything else.

I suppose that's about enough fangirling. I'm off to go read some manga, and then hopefully post in my blog. And perhaps watch some of the anime I've rented from the library this week - I have the first DVDs of Descendents of Darkness and Fushigi Yuugi, and also the Perfect Blue movie that looks like it'd be great. Probably not up for another movie, though. It's already midnight, :/

That's exactly what I liked more about this movie, too. I think I felt more connection to the story in the first one, but for the most part I really loved the character development that went on in this movie. The only character I am really disappointed about is Norrington. He was so my favourite coming out of the last film, and now all I can do lament the loss of both his hardcore values and super hot uniform. I almost kind of hoped that they might try to build on his relationship with Elizabeth, because she represents all of the things that he loved and lost while he now has this whole bad boy appeal that she is obviously attracted to in men. But, alas! I guess it was not meant to me. I can just stare at this picture (http://media.outnow.ch/Movies/Images/2006/PiratesOfTheCaribbean2/movie.fs/23.jpg) and make up scenarios in my mind, hehe. I don't want to give off the impression that I'm a hardcore Norrington/Elizabeth shipper, but I just wanted them to play out his angst in other ways that didn't make him look so self-serving.

Yeah, Norrington is definitely intriguing. After now having seen Horatio Hornblower, maybe I'd find him more attractive if I went back to the first movie, :) I definitely like him better scruffy and without the wig though, ;D

*flails* I had no idea that you watched Horatio Hornblower! Maybe I have just been completely oblivious to my friends list, but I can't seem to remember you mentioning it... I'll feel really bad if you posted about it already and I just forgot.

Anyway! Woo! I love love love Hornblower, which is probably one of the reasons why Norrington became such a favourite. I have this unhealthy obsession with the age of sail/British Royal Navy, and Norrington just represented everything awesome that I adored about it. In some ways they played up the pirates=cool Navy=boring stereotypes, but I think they also showed how the Navy really was the good guy, no matter how little it has been glamourized compared to piracy.

Now it kind of seems like they've fallen back on the old standard of "Rules and authority are bad, let's fight for freedom!" The only thing that I can hope is that they will continue to develop Beckett as a kind of pirate himself, undermining justice and operating according to his own law based on personal desires. Then a third party will be required to balance out between pirate-pirates and trying-to-appear-respectable-but-really-just-acting-like-a-pirate-pirates, and of course that's when Norrington will rediscover his true duty and purpose and his will return in his UNIFORM!! and Bethany will turn into a happy pile of goo while watching and everything will end wonderfully ever after. Hooray!!

...yes, I live in a sad, sad world of denial.

Wahh, I really need to check for comments more often, lol. But yeah - I watched it mostly because I knew Jamie Bamber was in it. The mother of a college friend of mine knows of my love for Jamie Bamber and lent them to me, so now I watch them. I've watched the second four DVDs....now I need to watch the first four.

But yes, HH is pwn.
