WisCon 34

WisCon Programming Sign-Ups are open!

And new this year, you can indicate, "I would like to attend this panel." It will let schedulers know which rooms to use.

Go here to sign up.

My goal this year is to sign up for anime/manga panels. They never make it into the program! I will get over my fear and be on a panel! Just don't laugh at me if it happens!

I'll be making an "OMG Help The Gathering!" call some time this weekend.....so far there are only 5 activities, ;_; I feel like a bad coordinator.

I feel like a bad coordinator.

Bollocks!! I know that for us (Jess, johanna... oh, bother, you know who i mean when i say "us") it's just that i haven't taken time to contact everyone else to see if we're interested in doing ours again.

If you do a panel this year, would you like us to host a post-panel drinking party for you in our room? I found it so relaxing last year! ;)

OOOOH MIMOSAS.

I think Jackie would be awesome on a panel!

I still have this fear that I will not be able to go to WisCon, b/c if I don't get my EU passport back in time from mailing it off to get Phredd's shit in order, I would be too scared to fly in & out on my US passport--which has nothing in it to persuade them to let me in the country for a long period of time. ;_;

I am still crossing my fingers that everything works out for you.

Thank you!

Jackie would be awesome at most anything she set her mind to, i think. ;)

Still crossing my fingers that nothing fucks up your WisCon travel!! It's interesting that travelling in/out of the US on your US passport makes you hesitate -- i have a coworker with triple citizenship* and she's said she usually travels in/out of the US on her US passport.

You people are making me blush, ;_;

Yeah, I travel INTO the US on my US passport but INTO the EU on my EU passport. On my US passport, w/o any visa or anything in it, the longest I would have the right to stay is 6 months on a tourist visa. And then I'd be in the UK system as having arrived & needing to depart by then. I could presumably sort it all out by showing my EU passport at some point, but it's the sort of thing I don't want to fuck around w/& that has the potential to become a much bigger deal than it ought to.

Ah, i didn't get from your original comment that you were worried about the getting back into the UK part of the trip.

[kicks UK bureaucracy to make them go faster]

The drinking party will depend on what time of day it is! Although I guess if it's early, it could be a tea-drinkingi party.

What?? Mimosas are totally a breakfast food! Trufax.

[identity profile] takumashii.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
They have orange juice!

(We went out for brunch one time in North Carolina. My sister was much put out that it was 11:00 and they wouldn't let her order a mimosa because they weren't allowed to sell alcohol until noon...)

A brunch without a mimosa is just breakfast.

What sorts of activities are there so far? Do you have ideas for activities but don't have people for them yet? And feel free to ignore this comment if you're going to answer these questions in your call. I just have a bit of free time right this second and am curious.

So far, we have:
Galleys/ARCs,
Hair-braiding,
Tiptree Auction preview,
Tarot card reading,
and paper crafts.

There are a couple of activities that we usually have, but that have no point-person (Clothing Swap, Knitting/Stitching Circle, OddCon Cow Tipping).

There are a few regulars who I just need to try contacting again (BPAL sniffing, cookie people), but there are also a few people who are usually there or who usually run things, but who won't be there this year.

I will probably be a little more detailed in my Call to Action!

[identity profile] seeksadventure.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. I will think on what I might be able to do. I'm not a huge Gathering fan (the space always feels too full to me) but maybe if I were behind a table doing something, I would be able to participate more. I'll keep an eye out for your post about it. Thanks.

No problem! And no pressure, either - even though I whine about it in my personal job, I want to make sure that the people who are there want to be there, etc.

But yes, in the past I've found that rather than being overwhelmed by the room, I have a better time when I focus on one table at a time.

I'm an introvert who has often done the "walk into the Gathering, get overwhelmed, walk back out thing," and i found things MUCH more manageable last year when i was sitting behind a table running an event. It was much easier to talk to people if they came to me. And also i was doing it with friends, which meant at any given time one of us could sit back and take an introvert break while the other 2 could work the crowd.

This is just my experience! But i wanted to mention it as a data point.

Let me know what time I'd need to be there, because I'd totally be a point-person for a knitting circle but my plane is not getting in until 1:00-ish Friday.

[identity profile] mystickeeper.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that might make you cut it just short - The Gathering starts at 1:00pm.

However, that could work; the knitting circle is probably what I'm least concerned about. So long as I arrange chairs in a circle, people can just kind of sit and knit as they please. It's sort of a self-starter activity.

I know that [livejournal.com profile] purplefrog26 has done massage at the gathering in the past.

Yeah, she has; all of these people got e-mails from me over a month ago. I'll be sending more out to those who haven't responded yet.

Maybe [livejournal.com profile] asim or [livejournal.com profile] jenwrites would be up for a Belly Dance something or other. Or there was another person who did ballroom at one point.
