Geek.Kon '08

Okay, so I've decided I'm going to Geek.Kon and I'm going to have a good time.

I'll be at my part-time job until 11am on Saturday, but other than that, I'm pretty free to hang out. I intend to purchase things in the Dealers' Room and at Artist Alley. It's also be cool to attend panels with any of you who are going (this convention is free), or join people for meals. If you're on my friends' list and we don't have each other's cell phone numbers, let me know and we can PM.

This year's program book is available online in PDF format.

Anime Suggestions
A nice array of different kinds of series has been put up, and luckily for n00bs, the first couple episodes of each series are what are being shown. Here are my recommendations for those new to anime, or people who are looking for new series.

Genshiken (Sat, 10am)
About an anime club in Japan made up of university students. Focus on how anime fans are viewed in Japan, as well as relationships. A good series for people who are already fans.

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle (Sat, 1:50pm)
Based on a manga series by CLAMP. Princess Sakura loses all of her memories, and three men try to help her regain them with the help of the Dimension Witch, Yuko. Of course, the power she gives them doesn't come without a steep price for each person....

Story of Saiunkoku (Sat, 4:00pm)
I've only seen one episode, but I know it's set in medieval China, and is a combination of romance, comedy, and drama. Lots of people whose opinions I respect like it, so....go for it.

Paradise Kiss (Sat, 4:50pm)
Based on a manga series by Ai Yazawa, author of NANA (a favorite of mine!). Yukari is a high school student with a strict mother, and is sick of her life. She is whisked a way by a transvestite to a fashion club, where her new friends make her into a hot model. She's unsure of herself at first, but being surrounded by charismatic and talented people who are following their dreams changes her for the better.

When They Cry (aka: Higurashi no Naku Koro ni) (Sun, 9:50am)
This series is probably not good for n00bs. It's heavy on the cutesy character design, but then tosses a mindfuck your way by having the characters commit heinous acts of violence, and then completely resets the world and relationships every 4 episodes. I've blogged about the first episode here.
(WATCH THE BEAUTIMOUS OPENING WITH THE COOL SONG!)

Haibane Renmei (Sun, 11:30am)
I wasn't a huge fan of this series, but everyone else and their mom loves it. It has a really nice character design. Basically, girls wake up in a world where they are Haibane - sort of like angels, with wings and halos. Are they in an Afterlife? Is their world Heaven, or a Purgatory?

Code Geass (Sun, 2:10pm)
I blogged a lot about the first season. This series is essentially a beautiful and heinous soap opera with giant robots. Still, it has a really interesting premise and great character design, so I recommend the first two episodes to n00bs.

AZUMANGA DAIOH (Sun, 3pm)
THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SERIES, EVER. It is hilarious. I don't know what else to say. Everyone should watch Azumanga Daioh.

Rough Outline of Stuff I'd Attend, if given all the time in the world
[With a note: The only one that's a must-attend for me is the CLAMP panel. So if you want me to go watch anime or something with you, I'll probably do it!]

Saturday
I don't know who all this interests, whenever the panel on The Guild is, I know that Felicia Day is doing a live internet chat. So....that's cool.

12pm - Worlds of Whedon? It kind of sounds like a Whedon love-fest, which is cool, but could be boring?
OTHERWISE, Costuming on a Budget

Actually, who am I kidding? I'll need to eat lunch!

1pm - Alchemy for Idiots? (Panel about the anime Fullmetal Alchemist)

3pm - SF&F TV Shows?

4pm - [livejournal.com profile] britrock37's CLAMP panel! I will probably contribute a lot from my audience chair, MWAHAHA

4:50pm - Go watch Paradise Kiss?

5:45pm - Watch the first 3 episodes of the X anime?

Sunday
9am - Yaoi panel? Mostly, I want to see Sari ([livejournal.com profile] britrock37) and Brian's Ouran High School Host Club outfits, :D

9:50am - When They Cry anime?

11am - Parent's Guide to Anime? Mostly to offer suggestions

12pm - Ecological Disasters in Anime (again....a panel by Sari. LOL.)

12:30pm - Gurren Lagann anime? (I've heard a lot about this series!)

I do wish there was a way to see who's on what panels....I'd love to see Sarah Monette (and get her to sign my copy of Melusine!) and Patrick Rothfuss on whatever they're on, ever.

Regardless, the list of things I want to watch make it clear to me that I haven't made a lot of time for anime lately. There is an Anime Club-shaped hole in my heart.

I'll second the recommendations of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles (which I've been reading as manga) and Code Geass (which I've been watching weekly on Cartoon Network). The latter tries to target both girl and boy audiences to often hilarious results, I think. It's delightfully ridiculous.

YES, CODE GEASS. Amazing. There were a lot of people in Anime Club who take it really seriously and love it, and while I do enjoy it, I'm like, "Wait, really? I love it because it's heinous."

[identity profile] tigrin.livejournal.com 2008-09-25 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see how anyone can take it seriously... it's SO ridiculous... lately I've been watching episodes with friends, and even though they have no idea who the characters are or anything, they can still pick up on how absurd it is. That show is so much fun that way. XD

Oh good! I'll be there at least some of the time. Mostly I'd like to hang out with people. I went to Worlds of Whedon last year, and it was a good panel; although I'm not sure they would cover much new ground.

Haibane Renmei is amazing. And Azumanga. Both TRC and ParaKiss are better in manga form IMO though.

I think you would really like Gurren Lagann!

I, too, must second Haibane Renmei. ^_^

You should try out the Steam Century Mystery, if you get some time. It's going to be a lot of fun. Plus, I can personally vouch for the fine upstanding character of the amazingly talented and wonderful Navigator of Her Majesty's Airship Badger.

Costuming on a budget? Does that even exist?

Although glue, cardboard and felt can get you surprisingly far, if you have skillz. (Most people who go to a panel on costuming on a budget, well, they don't have the power of pwn just yet.)

[identity profile] britrock37.livejournal.com 2008-09-25 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG can I say how excited I am that you're recommending pretty much all of my panels!!! That's neat. I'm glad you're coming. Especially to the CLAMP panel. I need more people who aren't just fanboys in my discussion of what's wrong with Chobits.

Also, not that I didn't help pick out ALL of the anime, but the ones you mentioned (except Higurashi) are all ones that I was like....seriously we're showing this.

I also think you will like Gurren Lagann. It's Gainax and it's silly. Kinda like Abenobashi silly...but with robots and sexual metaphor.

And I also second Haibane Renmei. I really like it. It's beautiful at the very least.

Oh, right, I was going to comment on your mention of us showing the first few episodes. I'm going to say that as long as I'm in charge of viewing we will ALWAYS show the first few episodes of a show. There were a ton of things that I really wanted to check out for the first time when I went to CONvergence and I ended up watching episodes like 12-16 and didn't know what was happening. I didn't like that. I figure that if people have already seen a show to the point that they could jump in in the middle and be just fine, they probably aren't going to be more inclined to watch it at the con rather than do other stuff. So first episodes it will remain.

Dang it, I used your Anime Club forum name instead of your LJ name! Oh well, I fixed it.

Yayyyy, CLAMP! I will so get your back if people try to defend Chobits. LOL. Of course, Antoine likes it, so maybe I'll practice arguing with him first.

I liked Abenobashi, so hopefully I'd like Gurren Lagann too? If I don't catch it at Geek.Kon, then hopefully I'll see it later.

WTF, I'm glad you're showing the first few episodes! That's a really bad policy to start in the middle, unless it's Cowboy Bebop or something.

[identity profile] britrock37.livejournal.com 2008-09-25 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't get me wrong, Chobits has its merits. And I mean, sometimes they're even trying to show us how stupid it is that people are in obsessive relationships with computer people.....and then they show a picture of Chi in her panties.

Seriously. WTF.

Yeah. There are some shows that you can start in the middle, like Cowboy Bebop or Azumanga Daioh, or last year we showed random episodes of Ghost Stories, but totally. I remember being all like....WTF is this? when I went to see stuff I had been meaning to check out and it was all in the middle and I was confused. So then I STILL didn't really know if I liked it.

Sorry if it sounded like I thought you said we shouldn't show first eps.....I re-read my comment just now and I realized I didn't make it clear that I was agreeing with you.

I'm still glad you're coming. And that you've got my back on Chobits.
