Too Tired for Titles

:( I must have fallen asleep around 11:00 without finishing my midterm. Woke up at 3:30, and wrote a bit, and now, an hour later, will be going to bed. Whyyyyy do I always fall asleep before I mean to, and then wake up for a long time in the middle of the night? This is why I am so tired all the time. Also, it's cold in my room and my nose is freezing. Woe. The rest of this entry was written before falling asleep.

Thoughts on tonight's episode of Heroes, "Fight or Flight."

So, Peter and Caitlin have an extremely sexual relationship in a way that I find kind of disturbing. It seemed like ever scene that cut to them showed them totally making out.

What was with Ricky's "Don't tell her that someone's looking for you, she'll only worry sick!" GEE, I WONDER WHY? Don't tell the female what's going on! She might think about it! Oh God!

Also, I was a mildly disgusted with Peter's "OMG, they really are looking for me! I can't hide any more!" revelations as Caitlin is sobbing in his arms for her dead brother. What a self-absorbed moron. I don't know how he gets these girls falling over themselves for him.

MOHINDER, WHY MUST YOU BE SO STUPID?! He was not stupid for like, an episode. And now? No. Just, no.

I love that Micah is a virtuoso pianist! What I don't like? Another female with powers she can't control - Monica. :( If Micah and Monica have powers, and so did DL, then does their great-grandmother, too?

I haven't watched Veronica Mars yet, but Kristen Bell seems pretty cool. I was excited because she had some agency, very active powers. Too bad she is a pawn of her father's, and obeys his every command!

I still have no Halloween costume. Nor do I have an idea for a Halloween costume. I always really, really would like to make a costume for an anime or novel character, but I never know how to do it, and never have the time. And now it's only days from Saturday, and I have nothing. Does anyone have any costume recommendations? Here are some costume-type things I have:
*A flower garland that I could wear on my head, with ribbons in the back. Pink, yellow, and white
*Black tights
*Skirts of various kinds: A couple black, one black with white accents, brown with floral accents
*A Lord of the Rings-esque cloak. Leaf-type clasp, hood, greenish, goes down to about my knees
*A cape that I procured at Wiscon. It's brown, with a pattern of leaves and flowers in a burnt orange color
*Mostly normal clothing?

My sewing skills are only rudimentary, but I could run and pick some stuff up at a craft store.....if I had an idea of what to do with it.

I had meant to mention this last night, but it looks like the budget is going to wrap up this week, from the legislative side of things. I was the one who got to go pick up the copies of the budget and deliver them to the Fiscal Bureau! Because driving state vehicles is awesome. Except when it takes me 3 full minutes to figure out how to turn off the headlights!

1. Elf. You can get ears at any of the halloween stores that pop up magically this time of year, or at Mallat's Pharmacy on Monroe St. (It's located near the arboreum ) Wear cape and clothes of your choice.

2. H&C character (of your choice, really). Garland on head, carry art supplies.

3. Pirate. Loose shirt (pref. with sleeves, not a t-shirt, no buttons. If it does have buttons, wear over a tank top and tie the ends in the front. It won't be period and who cares? Tights--pref. in bright colors, or stripes. Or Two layers--fishnets over something else. Where boot-like shoes if possible, or sandles. No tennis shoes. Loose pants, french-cuffed below the knees. Bandana. If possible, take cheap beaded necklaces, turn into long strands, and hang down from under the bandana, as if they were beaded strands of hair. Jewelry. Fabric (like another bandana--dirty, if you can) wrapped around one or two hands. Multiple belts. Weapon nice but unnecessary. Tell them you're Mary Black. Don't go topless (like she does. Too cold).

Haibane Renmei: fake wings from halloween store (don't forget the one on Johnson!), used clothing to match whatever the characters wear, halo. HR halos are not tinselly, so aim for something sturdy, like a styrofoam ring (craft store, very cheap), painted. Wire, headband. Bagel would be cute but too heavy.

Sloth: Dress as yourself, only more slovenly.

Nana. Surely you can figure this out?

Zombie. Play with makeup. Pale face, green tinges. Blue lips (vaseline + blue eye shadow). If you have plastic insects (toy store, etc) and eyelash glue, you can glue them on your face. Clothing to match.

Hope that helps?

Wahhhh, you are so right! Honey & Clover could be so easy. I could be....taller, brunette Hagu. I might try to think of a Hagu costume. It seems like Yamada and Hagu pretty much always wear skirts and cardigans. I like cardigans, so if one that I have doesn't work, I'll just go buy one.

Nana(s) would be so cool! But I feel like I'd have to have a wig to be recognizable?

And an elf is an excellent back-up.

I was a pirate last year, so I won't do it again.

You have good ideas! Thank you!

I loved Veronica Mars! I was actually sort of disappointed that they didn't just port Veronica the character over to Heroes. That show kind of needs more badasses. But Bell's new character is hilarious in a crazypants, daddy's girl sort of way.

I'm a little curious why you find Peter's and Caitlin's relationship so disturbing. It happens. Not everyone fits the model of perfect Catholic school children. But when they discovered Ricky's body, I do have to agree that Peter's word choice may not have exactly been "ideal" for such a situation; however, I think Peter was being at least a bit honorable when he said "this is my fault," by taking the blame for something that obviously wasn't his doing and was just an unfortunate circumstance all over.

And about Monica "not being able to control her powers"--I don't think it's really fair to categorize that as female bashing. I seem to remember them spending almost half a season on Hiro trying to learn to control his powers--not to mention all the time it took Peter to get everything under control, and don't forget about Isaac, either. And using all those characters as a basis of comparison, Monica seems to have things pretty well under control as it is--she can already wrestle, kung fu fight, do double dutch, make cool tomatoes, etc. She's got the power down pat. You might even say that she handles herself better than a lot of the other male characters.

So in conclusion, yes, Mohinder is a retard. A well-intentioned retard, yes, but still ultimately a retard.

Oh, and also Ted. I wouldn't have described "accidentally giving his wife cancer" a good example of a male character with his powers "under control."

Gordon: I don't find the fact that Peter and Caitlin are physical in itself disturbing (but thanks for the Catholic comment! That was great!), but I just wish they would ever...you know....talk? I find their attraction to one another a little inexplicable.

I think you're misinterpreting what I mean by someone having their powers under control. While it sometimes takes both male and female characters a while to gain mastery over their power, the super powers given to the female characters in some cases and inherently problematic. The one that takes the cake is Maya - she gets upset, cries black tears, kills people in close proximity to her, and who has the magical power to calm her down? A man, of course!
Jessica/Niki also have no capacity to control which personality is inhabiting her body.
Claire can heal herself, but her power is also problematic because it means she can be hurt repeatedly, and somehow her new flyboy telling her to jump off a cliff to prove something to him is romantic? She can still feel pain, but the show finds a reason to hurt her in every episode she's in.

The show has definite, undeniable issues with gender. Read here (http://coffeeandink.livejournal.com/741118.html), and #4 here (http://community.livejournal.com/bobthehaitian/9346.html#cutid1), for a flavor. The show also has serious issues with race. It's not just me noticing these things - they're real!

Okay, that qualifies your claim much better. I'm more satisfied with your argument now. And you're welcome for the Catholic comment. =P

But I will still point out that even you said that:
...the super powers given to the female characters in some cases are inherently problematic... [emphasis added]
Elle (Lightning Girl) doesn't seem to have any problems in this regard, and I'm sure I could name a few others. It might be disproportionate, yeah, but at the end of the day it's an action drama show on American television. What bothers me, though, is that there aren't really any males who are victimized. They're all either heroes or aggressors--but either way assuming the archetype of a "strong" male who is brave and doesn't show emotion.

I was excited about Elle until it became apparent that she is under the strict control of her father. If she had her own agency, she'd be much cooler, but it seems like she's setting up to be a foil to Claire, and thus not fully in control of herself.

At this point, my hope lies in Monica.

I forgot to watch Heroes yesterday. This may have been my subconcious again, telling me I didn't really want to watch it!

I'm always really lazy with Halloween costumes. I'd love to have something fancy, but I'm not willing to put the time in to come up with something. Your capes sound really awesome!
