Bookstores have souls
A local used/new (mostly used) is going out of business. I thought it'd be fun to catalogue the random books I get there?? Things are currently 40% off.
Purchased last evening:
A College of Magics by Caroline Stevermer
Ancient Light by Mary Gentle
Golden Witchbreed by Mary Gentle
The Law of Becoming (Jaran #4) by Kate Elliott
Out by Natsuo Kirino
Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison
Total was about $12.
They have lots of randomass fantasy, so if anyone has favorites, lmk.
Same for books by Sherri Tepper, C.J. Cherryh, or Toni Morrison.
This place also has a lot of current fiction that I identify as like, "Oprah's book club genre." So basically if you have some random recs, lmk.
They plan to stay open until their lease ends on November 30th, but judging by how picked over things were last night, that would really impress me. The clerk did say there were at least 1,000 books in the back room that still needed to be brought out, though, so it's definitely something I'll be visiting repeatedly.
I always get sad when bookstores go out of business. The shelves get picked over so quickly that the employees don't have the time properly arrange the books.
When Borders went out of business, I was experiencing lots of reflux pain. I used to sometimes go there just to make sure the manga was alphabetized, and to face-out books so that the shelves still looked full.
I ended up doing the same thing last evening in the sf/f section, ^^;;
The Boyfriend and I visited this location of Frugal Muse much more frequently than their other location (which is bigger). It's in the same little parking lot/shopping center as our favorite Chinese buffet in town. Their YA & fantasy sections have always been impressive, their manga not so much.

Wait, does face-out involving stacking many books on their feet so there's room to turn one to display its cover?
If yes I haunted some places and faced-out my sister's books. Imaginary solidarity was much better than actual contact, it turned out.
Empyting bookstores smell like good ideas never encountered, never pondered, never discussed. :(

IMO, that is not imaginary solidarity - it's real! Customers do tend to look at the faced-out books. It's hard to just look at spines, I think, so whatever's faced out gets noticed for sure.
And, yeah. It's just sad. :( I'm glad we have so many others in Madison, at least compared to Green Bay.

Toni Morrison: I love Beloved and consider The Bluest Eye unmemorable and overwritten, but many people are of the opposite opinion, so YMMV. CJ Cherryh: I will never lose a chance to mention Cyteen and the other novels of her Alliance-Union universe, and have a brief rec here. :D

& ty for the Cherryh. I've read the first third of the Cyteen trilogy/novel, although this reminds me I should check to see if they have the third. I didn't know there was a sequel to Cyteen, either, so that's super helpful.

Oh, that'd make sense. I think Beloved is more frequently taught in high schools and in non-specialized college classes, so perhaps there's a negative association from the kind of drudgework and/or analysis required in those environments?
Cyteen was originally intended as a single book and I see it around these days as a single volume, so they might have that. It's one of my favorite sf novels, and if you find it at the store and it works for you-- or even if it doesn't; I'm always interested in hearing why people dislike what I like, too, and I won't push it again!-- please do say? <3
(Regenesis is more like a very canon-flavored but suspiciously domestic longfic than a sequel: still worth reading, just not with expectations too high.)
