(no subject)

I really need to cull the comics series I'm following right now, but I just bought a pile of them & am happy to read what I've got right now.

I'm most excited about the new issue of Saga (I fucking love this series), but I also picked up the first two issues of Captain Marvel at the advice of sheisbatwoman.

ALSO got two volumes of Young Avengers from the library (along with Scissor Sisters albums bwahaha).

Overall, I like comic books but I am much more used to manga. It still feels weird to buy individual issues instead of waiting for the collected volumes. Still undecided which is best.

ETA: LOL at this note at the back of Captain Marvel issue #1 detailing all of the progressive changes they made in the reboot of this series, they say that they wanted a less sexy costume in part b/c her previous was not "a costume most fathers would want their daughters dressing up in."

I usually go the to comics shop on the way to uni in PhD City. The one in Home City is a bit too "OMG, IT'S A GIRL!" to be a nice place to visit. Also they don't have the greatest selection.

I'm not reading Batwoman, actually. The others on my pull list are Mind The Gap Girls Gone Geek review - not spoilery, beyond the first page of the comic), Fatale, Hawkeye and Winter Soldier. When tumblr has recovered, I'll look up some scans and see if I have to add a DC title to my Marvel heavy pull list!

Kelly Sue DeConnick, who writes Captain Marvel, just started writing Avengers Assemble, and her first issue (#9) is lots of fun and has Carol being awesome. (Apparently DeConnick was at Wiscon last year?)

It is probably time for me to catch up with Captain Marvel and finish the first volume of Saga.

Issues #1-8 are neither necessary nor recommended. The initial idea was to create an ongoing series starring the movie line-up of Avengers but in the comics continuity. I found it incredibly boring, mostly going through the motions; it seemed to be there mainly to introduce new versions of characters who are (probably) going to be important in the movieverse -- the Guardians of the Galaxy and a villain group named the Zodiac. (Okay, I have to admit I liked the sentient tree. I'm still down on the talking racoon, though.) It's by Brian Bendis, who was the main Avengers writer at the time, but it had too many adventure hijinks and not enough Avengers banter and/or emo.

Anyway, the first eight issues were a self-contained storyline, and it looks like DeConnick is starting a new self-contained storyline.

But you might want to look in the back issues box for Avenging Spider-Man #9-10, which is a guest arc by DeConnick starring, once again, Carol Danvers. (I have a lot of issues with Marvel & women, but they do seem to have made a nice push for Captain Marvel with cross-overs in successful books.)
