I liked the first volume of Peach Girl, even though I feel like I shouldn't, given its craptastic messages. Maybe it's because I've recently watched the first 10 episodes of Super GALS! ?


My Final Fantasy XII game continues. I haven't yet surpassed how far I'd gotten in my previous game, but my memory is so poor that it's like playing it for the first time!

I think that I like Balthier/Ashe a lot, but I also like Balthier/Fran a lot, too.
If this game ends up pairing Ashe with Vaan, I....don't even know how angry I will be.

Peach Girl is so faily & yet I read the whole thing (& BOUGHT the whole thing, which says more about my financial state several years ago than anything, esp. cuz I bought that shit new). Lots of bits I had to wince & scream about & yet damn if I didn't keep reading.

What about Super GALS! might make you more open to fail in Peach Girl? ^^;;; (What have I forgotten, ack???)

(In all seriousness, I'd love to hear some exposition on its flaws. There were things that annoyed me about the series, but it didn't strike me as OMG THE FAIL in the vein of something like, say, Twilight.)

I've only read the first volume, but so far there's "my best friend who's a girl is a heinous bitch who hates me and destroys my life for no apparent reason" (which I DESPISE), and also "I really like this guy who thinks that all girls with dark skin are sluts! Instead of writing him off as a dickwad, I will go to great lengths to make myself have lighter skin."

I'm bad at exposition that doesn't directly relate to my life (lol), so for now, that's all I've got.

Argh. There is depth and reason and backstory involved in both of these situations, but I don't want to spoil you for any of it D:

I don't have the first volume on me, but I know this happens early, so it won't be much of a spoiler even if you haven't seen it quite yet: Toji stands up for Momo against a couple of guys who are harassing her, telling them she's not interested and getting them to back off. Momo certainly hasn't been subject to that kind of harassment from Toji -- all she has is a secondhand report that he finds lighter skin more attractive, and her own insecurities have filled in the rest.

Super GALS! hasn't been very faily yet, I think it's just the obsession with superficial things like looks while also being in high school that makes me group the two together in my mind. They are....similar sorts of shoujo?

I think the only thing kinda faily in Super GALS was, "Oh Aya, your grades are going down because you never study any more! Your parents are mean! All that matters is right now, and you shouldn't have to try harder!"
Granted, this isn't "fail" in an oppression way, but possibly just not a great message to send to young girls.

In the context of how stressed out Japanese students get about their mandatory testing, maybe it's okay, though? It could just be a cultural difference that I'm missing.

Ah, that makes sense! Though Super GALS! has more heart than Peach Girl ever dreamed of -- Ran may be obsessed w/fashion but she also sticks up for her friends & is a do-gooder despite herself. (Watch out for fail when dudebro-whose-name-I-can't-remember-&-can't-be-arsed-to-Google shows up from Okinawa. I love him, but I think the way the show treats him is problematic.)

(Wait, am I nuts? I just googled & I couldn't find mention of said character being from Okinawa. Maybe I assumed based on his skin color & got him mixed up in my head w/Yoko from Princess Nine? Anyway: darker skin, compared to a monkey. PROBLEMATIC.)

And re: your above comment--how did I forget the whole central premise of how Momo is bad & a slut b/c of her skin tone?!? There's lots of sexual assault fail later on though too. :/

I'm playing through FFXII right now too! I think Balthier/Basch is how it ends up but it's been a while since I played it and I didn't finish. :P My Fran beats on everybody who's asleep or confused and otherwise punishes with the regen or protect stick. It's her costume--I find it lends itself to a sterner characterization.
