WisCon Anime Panels FTW!

People!

Please sign up to be on anime panels at WisCon with me!

Every year one anime panel is suggested, not enough interest is registered, and the panel doesn't make it to the schedule. It's very sad because I think that there are tons of anime/manga series with feminist themes. It is a HUGE section of genre fiction that is not discussed in great detail at WisCon. I think that paying attention to these two media is imperative to capturing a younger audience, which overall WisCon needs assistance with.

In this year's programming database, you can both volunteer to be on a panel, and also register that you would like to SEE panel.

I am terrified to be on panels and I really don't want to do it - but after objective consideration, I can truthfully acknowledge that I probably do know more about anime than the average WisCon goer, so I have volunteered for both of them. (There's a Studio Ghibli panel as well as the panel about teamwork that I suggested, however poorly written the description is, :D)

Sign up! Do it!

I looked at both the anime panels & I didn't think I knew enough about their respective topics.

Plus I am still paranoid that my passport will still be held hostage by the government here & I'll have to cancel my trip. ;__;

Andy would make an excellent panelist on anime because he's not only fairly broadly-watched (he was anime club president after all), but he's also read up on the history and development of early anime.

Whether i can persuade him to be a panelist, however, remains to be seen. Typically when i want him to try something he will dig in his heels and resist. HMPH!

Could Andy be lured with treats of some sort????

I have the same problem with my boyfriend! I can't even get him to go to WisCon (although he has vocalized that he is more than willing to join us for meals).

Filling it out now!

Shiny: Romance novel panel! Scary: Dollhouse panel. (I'm curious, but then I might be faced with people who like it when I can't scroll past.) Also...wow, there sure are a lot of Avatar panels.

IMHO the Dollhouse panel will succeed only with a variety of opinions about the show. If only we prospective panelists could pinpoint our opinions on the topic!

The problem is that I have a hatred for the show that goes beyond rational *and yet, would happily watch any actor in it again, particularly Dichen Lachman, Olivia Williams, Miracle Laurie, and Enver Gjojik, not that I can spell his name) and virtually every defense of the show revolves around finding rapists and human traffickers interesting and/or sympathetic, not to mention victimization=storytelling tool. Not sure I trust myself not to explode at times, no matter how well reasoned or intelligent the argument may be.

I think that previously, there were even more Avatar panels - the programming team consolidated a few of them.

Parts of the Dollhouse panel might be scary, but because it's WisCon, I have faith that few people would show up with some serious critiques.

I think I said I'd be happy on one of the Ghibli panels, but that's really the extent of my anime knowledge. I did end up submitting the gaming panel, though!

Yay! Submitting panels is both scary and exciting, I think. I feel accomplished, but then once it's posted I get all, "WTF I should have worded that much better! Nobody will know what I'm talking about!"

I think I marked 'interested in attending' to the gaming one! I don't feel confident enough to be on one, though, since I play about 5-10 years behind what's released, lol. (I am so cheap!)

Because you asked, I signed up for both of them. Fingers crossed!

Yay! I will be so excited if the anime/manga panels make it to the programming book this year! I think it's been a while since any anime/manga panels were in the programming schedule.

Hopefully they will! Given that a manga in translation just won the Tiptree and all. ^_^
