Housekeeping

There is this business of Dreamwidth. This post is not about my own posting habits (I have yet to utilize my DW account for regular posting), but rather about the way in which I follow you people.

Because I have friended many people both here and on Dreamwidth, I frequently become annoyed when I go to DW, as many posts there are ones I've already read here, and it is irritating to sort through them to find the ones I haven't read yet.

I hope to solve this problem with a poll. You are of course welcome to leave comments to this post, advising me where best to read you. Whether I follow you on DW or LJ, you will not lose "access" to my private posts in any way. However, I wish to only follow *your* posts in one place: LiveJournal or Dreamwidth.

And for the record, my public posts are still cross-posted to my blog, which is where this business began in the first place, almost a decade ago.

ETA: I have answered the poll myself for anyone wishing to confirm my own habits!

[Poll #1503067]

I'm antarcticlust there, too - I basically just saved the name, though. I've been frustrated as an LJ-er because a lot of my DW-using friends' posts don't show up, or if they do, openID aspect doesn't work because when I click through to the post, I just get the login page. This means that I basically only end up reading LJ posts, for the most part. I don't like having to log in to DW to comment, and to toggle between the two when I'm reading - I barely have time to read LJ as it is.

Until there is a mass exodus of my friends to DW, I'll be staying on LJ. This is largely because most of my commenting readership isn't part of the DW/fandom community, and so is unlikely to make the move, but also partly because I see parallels between LJ's early years and DW, and want to see how DW holds up over time.

My thoughts are basically the same as yours - I've mostly been frustrated with/annoyed by Dreamwidth.

However, it seems like there's nothing for it, so if nothing else, my reading lists will be organized!

[identity profile] antarcticlust.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely let us know how your LJ/DW organizing works out! I haven't been able to make it work yet, so I'd love pointers.

I'm reika on dreamwidth. I use the DW account mostly for food-related babble, but LJ is primarily my fannish one.

Ahh, I see - I think that different purposes in posting different places will warrant my following you in both!

[identity profile] bibliofile.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to avoid duplicate posts, but mostly I've (re)solved that problem recently by ignoring LJ & DW. Poll translation for that last question, then, would be "I haven't figured it out either, thus annoying all my dual-site friends in addition to myself."

I think I'll continue to follow you in both places, although I think you post the most on Twitter!

Just to clarify my poll results. I am primarily over at DW, and if you're able to follow me there and comment it'd be awesome! I'm trying to cross-post to LJ less because it began to annoy me and i found that people still wouldn't come over to DW to comment anyway. However! I do occasionally post something exclusive to LJ because there's a core knot of people here with zero interest in DW and they're sometimes the people i really *need* to talk to with a post -- for example, all of my trip planning posts back in september and october wound up being on LJ only because some of my friends in England just don't interact with DW.

What i've done with my own journals to accomodate of the issues you're trying to navigate here is that i keep my DW people still friended on LJ (Jess and johanna, for example), but i've created a reading list that filters them OUT. I read DW first and usually see their posts there -- i don't want to come over here and see them *again*.

[identity profile] mystickeeper.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Your latter paragraph is basically what I'm doing - I experience LJ through filters, so I'll be able to keep people friended, having access to my locked posts, but will be able to take their posts off my Friends List if I've already seen their posts at DW.

I think I'll probably watch you at DW and not LJ, as it seems you're more firmly established there......if there's something urgent for me to see at LJ, you will have to let me know!

[personal profile] wrdnrd 2009-12-24 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, i suspected that's how you were going to handle your reading lists -- your usage of filters seems about as robust as my own. I'm glad you made this post so we could talk about it, so i'll know to nudge you if i ever need to make an LJ-exclusive post. Or, now that i think about it, what i'll probably wind up doing in such an event is simply posting at DW that there's a post here.

Hey, i sent you an email last week -- did it arrive? No worries if it did and you haven't had a chance to reply, i'm more checking just to make sure it didn't get filtered into spam!

It did arrive! I just fail at replying.

I have the same name on DW, but I missed yours. What is it again?

On DW, I am laceblade

[identity profile] sasha-feather.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Just to let you know what I am doing, I am crossposting nearly everything. I will occasionally do a Dreamwith-only post that is related to fanfic/fandom or Follow Friday (http://sasha-feather.dreamwidth.org/tag/follow+friday), which is a meme for highlighting interesting content on DW and thus seems not worth crossposting.

[identity profile] suibhne-geilt.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I am corvid on Dreamwidth, but the only time I ever go there, really, is if somebody cross-posts a poll from DW to LJ.

I just switched over to doing primary posting on DW that I crosspost to LJ. So either place is fine! :) This is probably the way it will be for a while, and I'm not renewing my paid time on LJ (so if you follow on LJ you may not see my OH SO BRILLIANT icon collection).

[identity profile] seaya.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
So far very few posts that are on DW aren't also on LJ. I tend to cross post fannish snarky stuff, but otherwise most is on lj. But this may change in the future.

I think I'll probably be following you on LJ then, although if things change in the future, I'll adjust.

[identity profile] fengi.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
At this time my DW account lays fallow.

[identity profile] maevele.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I mostlypost through dw and crosspost it to lj. I am considering posting from lj primarily though, because then I get an auto link on my facebook. 90 % of my posts are on both, at this time, the exceptions being when I am posting through some alternate lj source/voice posts, etc,

[identity profile] seeksadventure.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I basically only got a DW for this account so I could have my user name and have access to people who moved fully to DW, though I rarely read over there. This account is a permanent LJ account, so I doubt I'll be going anywhere any time soon.

[identity profile] lilaia.livejournal.com 2009-12-26 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I am kal on DW though I am rarely over there.

I'm cross-posting everything right now except the v. occasional LJ-only post (which tends to be things like "Anyone want a DW invite code?"), so I voted that I'm crossposting everything.
ext_9215: (Default)

[identity profile] hfnuala.livejournal.com 2010-01-23 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm nuala there and to be honest, I'm mostly there to name sit. All my content originates on lj.

[identity profile] taeli.livejournal.com 2010-01-24 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm taeli there but I haven't done anything with it since the first day, when I cross-posted all my posts up until that point over. Since then I've not posted much besides tweets here and nothing over there. I forget to check my reading list at dreamwidth because most of my friends are here and only repost there.

[identity profile] sophy.livejournal.com 2010-01-25 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
To clarify my answers:

I created a DW account when it opened up publicly, I am sophygurl there, I imported everything there at the time from LJ so all the stuff that was on LJ at that time is over there, but I haven't added anything new over there or changed any of my settings, etc.

I also have zero clue if we're already friended there or not because I almost never ever ever go there. I mostly just use my login in to comment on people's journals who post here cross-posted from there and don't allow comments here. And sometimes not even then because they forget to add me over there and I can't be arsed to ask them to add me a second place just so I can go: "LOL" to a post. Argh.

Count me in as another one frustrated with DW. heh

So, feel free to add me on DW and I'll add you back, but it won't actually mean much either way.

[identity profile] bipagan.livejournal.com 2010-01-28 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still BiPagan over on DW but most everything happens on LJ. And, there are just a few posts that are LJ only.
