Saturday Morning Joys (aka: this is why I keep a part-time job!)

Has anyone read any of the manga called Ooku, by Fumi Yoshinaga?

We have volume one here at the bookstore, and it sounds interesting, based on the description:
In Edo period Japan, a strange new disease called the Red Pox has begun to prey on the country's men. Within eighty years of the first outbreak, the male population has fallen by seventy-five percent. Women have taken on all the roles traditionally granted to men, even that of the Shogun. The men, precious providers of life, are carefully protected. And the most beautiful of the men are sent to serve in the Shogun's Inner Chamber...

WAIT, I just realized that this was the manga-ka who did Antique Bakery. SQUEEEEEE!!

/Book report to follow.

I think I nudged Nancy into getting that one because it won the Japanese Tiptree (Sense of Gender Award, IIRC). Let us know how it is! It seems like it could be either awesome or deeply creepy, based on that premise...

I will do so!

I was reading Amazon reviews, and it sounds like people like it a lot, and while there are hints of male/male relationships, the focus is not on yaoi, but on women/etc. I'll probably read volume one tonight.

Go you for getting MOAR MANGA! Sometimes I wonder if we should separate out our manga from the rest of the graphic novels, but I already think it's pretty cool that we have a shelf of YA graphic novels.

I've heard a lot of good things and was interested in picking it up; please post a review after you read it.
