INDECISION

So I'd like to register a Dreamwidth account mostly just so I can keep track of the rest of you fools.

1) When I register with OpenID using my LJ account, while I be able to name it a different username?

2) What should by username be? "mystickeeper" was an alias made by 14-year-old!me, to go with my website, Mystical Fields. Mystic Keeper was a really clever pseudonym! *cough*
I want something bad-ass. What kinds of things do I like? Guns, knives, books, anime, manga, trope-bending, the band Placebo, maps, food, dogs, puppies, wolves, West Wing, Buffy, Veronica Mars, Firefly, TERMINATOR, meta, politics, blah. ALL OF THOSE THINGS SHOULD MELD INTO ONE NAME.

Maybe I could just be "Jaina Solo." Or, in allegiance to Steph, "thejacklescackles."

they're interoperable, and i have yet to see anyone who plans to leave lj entirely. but some are keeping comments in their dreams only, and yes, you need to use your openid for that.

openids don't alias - it will just be mystickeeper.livejournal.com.

in any case, since it's an lj fork, all dreamwidth accounts can be turned into lj rss feeds, and vice-versa. i think dreamwidth will feed my entire flist as one rss, maybe. or possibly i'm making that up. in any case, it's less that anyone is leaving, and more that some of us are deciding to use upgraded code. :) it really should be mostly seamless if you do nothing. and once your openid is validated, you can stay logged in both places all the time - but you'll only have 6 icons for commenting on dream posts.

Registering at Dreamwidth w/ your LJ login as your OpenID doesn't really register you a Dreamwidth account. You'll be allowed to comment on entries and create a reading list, but you won't be able to actually post. If you do register w/ an actual Dreamwidth account at a later date, i believe you'll be able to eventually merge you OpenID identity w/ your Dreamwidth account so that comments made using your identity will switch over to show as coming from your new Dreamwidth account (i read this somewhere, but can't find the link right now).

When you sign up to use your OpenID (i.e., LJ) account at Dreamwidth, it will look like this:
http://www.dreamwidth.org/userinfo.bml?userid=12940&t=I

(Except yours should be more along the lines of mystickeeper.livejournal.com.)

Does that make sense? I'm drinking port, so, y'know....

It does! Well, between you and [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur, anyway. I HAS AN OPEN ID THERE.

okay, some other clarification - you don't register with openid - you just log in. lj functions as an openid provider - that's why it can't be aliased, because it *is* your lj.

you validate it with an email address, which means the replies to comments will be emailed to you.

also, it means that if you later register a dreamwidth account (sign up for one, with whatever username - closed beta is invite-only) and use the same email, after open beta starts you can unify the two - so that all of your comments are controlled by you, whenever you made them.

does that make sense?

the big point: whether or not you want to keep track of everyone, you do not need to move yourself. it's all designed to work together, unlike the lj clones (insanejournal, journalfen, etc).

It does make sense! In fact, I have now done it.

I look forward to unification!

I like how harmonious this shiz is.

Side note: My brother also likes that band and used to call them "Place"+"bo" since he didn't know what the world "placebo" meant. Oh, he wasn't a kid, btw, it was high school.

I think your handle should be Buffy_Mars_the_Book_Cutter_Hearts_Puppies...Well, actually, let's be honest. Calling yourself "Jaina Solo" usually implies that you like at least 3/4 of the things you listed. GEEK. However, $10 says Jaina Solo is already taken lol

I FIGURED OUT WHAT I WANT TO BE CALLED FOR REALZ. But I'm not telling anyone because I don't want some bastard to steal it.
