Breakfast at Tiffany's

I think I'm a rarity in that I read Truman Capote's novella Breakfast at Tiffany's before watching the movie for the first time yesterday.

Upon finishing the novella, I wondered a bit why so many girls my age loved the movie version, calling it a romance. Now I understand!

As I watched the movie, I kept wondering if I had missed so many major plot points, because that happens to be a lot when I am reveling in an author's writing style, as I did with Capote's writing. Of course, what had really happened was a lot of changes made by the writers, most especially to the ending.

In the end, I liked the movie, although it was almost ruined entirely by Mickey Rooney's racist portrayal of Mr. Yunioshi.

Do you guys like the novella or the movie better? If you haven't read the novella, you totally should! Capote's writing is exquisite. What do you like about the movie?

Um, I've seen the movie but I barely remember it. I like the song better.

Yeah, I can't get it out of my head. Moooon.....Riverrrrrrr

It makes me want to re-watch the Honey & Clover anime, because I know there's a cell phone ringtone reference to it!

Yeah! It's just...quite different, I guess. I liked Paul Varjak so much in the movie! SO ATTRACTIVE AND BROODY. But in the novella, he wasn't nearly as charismatic. Did we even know what his name was?

Um. I agree. I didn't lust after Varjak in the book, but damn if I didn't think he was a cutie after seeing the film. I like the writing in the novella, and I like the pacing of things. I think I had a hard time with some of the film's acting, which probably links back to why I enjoy the novella so much.

I haven't read the novella yet (hmm... book club suggestion?), so obviously the movie is my favorite - I just love Audrey. If you watch the commentary or read interviews everyone involved says that their only regret is the mr. Yunioshi character! And I was shocked when I found out that the male lead went on to be on the A-Team! He's rather young and handsome in the movie :)

It's a great super-short suggestion (119 pages or something??). Maybe we could do it when you guys have midterms/finals to grade? There are three other short stories usually packaged with it.

That's good to know that people regret it in retrospect! Yay for societal progression.

I also had a great time spotting your LJ icons in this movie, :D
