Unorganized Fandom Chatter....because I am lazy.

I can see why people wouldn't like the new opening sequence of Veronica Mars because it's a change, but I think I kind of love it.

I love watching Logan. Find it very interesting that he didn't raise his hand when the prof asked who thought they would never do what Lynndie England did. And he didn't not raise it in an assholish way....more like he just understood what he was capable of.

Go Keith! Pen-and-bear-trap FTW. Veronica is so his daughter.

"This girl accused me of rape last year."
"Haha! *punches him in the arm* Oh, you."

Holy shit! Between Veronica's faux-drunken sorority dance with two other girls and her dream about Lilly fooling around with girls, I can only imagine the squeeing that happened in fandom about slashing Veronica with girls.

The prisoner experiment is interesting because we studied it in a few of my classes. Also, Rider Strong's voice sounds like the English dub version of Kyo from Fruits Basket.

HAY! I can't see all of the books, but I definitely spotted Ronald Takaki's A Different Mirror on Wallace's RA's desk. BWAHAHA.

I side with Logan on this surveillance stuff. If Veronica wants to be mad at him for not spending time with her, then she should confront him. Not saying I wouldn't do exactly as she did, given the proper technology, but hey, whatever. But if this is the tiff that leads to them breaking up (as they inevitably will), I'm going to be super pissed.

Aww, Veronica and Logan kissing on their way up to the stacks was adorable.

:[ at Logan's Christmas pear story. Man, what a fucked up family.

And as for Bleach! I saw a random DVD at the library, so I picked it up to see what the anime is like (I've been reading the manga). The anime is about what I expected....overly long. It would take forever to get through these fight scenes I don't really care about, because it's harder to skim a DVD than a book. Don't get me wrong: I like bad-ass fight animation as much as the next girl, but Byakuya's sakura of doom (is this where [livejournal.com profile] oyceter gets her journal subtitle?) aside, the fights are pretty boring to watch.

I think my favorite characters (when they're not being annoying) are Rukia, Orihime, Tatsuki, and Uryu Ishida.

Still, episode 16 and they're already going to Soul Society? I can't imagine how many filler episodes there must be. Frickin' a. I liked the opening a lot, though.

I only have one more physical volume to read, and then I'll have to *ahem* the volumes because I can't get them from the library any more. Maybe I'll switch back to Naruto for a little while?
How come it's Ichigo who has to get stronger to protect everyone else? Why shouldn't Orihime get stronger?

[livejournal.com profile] sasha_feather and I have been watching Fullmetal Alchemist, and watched three episodes last night, including the Barry the Chopper one. It shows me how good shounen (or is it seinen?) can be. I like watching a protagonist who is actually afraid that he's going to die, and I think FMA is bucketloads better than Naruto or Bleach. Win.

As much as we all need a good hero story once in a while, I love that FMA focuses on the flaws of the heroes. It makes it so much more realistic and to me a lot more worthwhile for analysis. My favorite part though is that it breaks down stereotypes and unfair standards set by the media and it gives people an opportunity to unpack the idea of what it means to be a hero. This feels especially important for boys and the idea of masculinity that society so thoroughly totes. Even sending the message to boys that it's okay to question the definition of masculinity is an accomplishment, in my opinion.

Princess Tutu takes that approach as well, which is why I love it, though it does pick several characters to be stereotypical but it's intentional and those characters are used to point out the difference.

FMA manga is about the most awesomesauce thing ever. I like the anime, but have problems with the second half, and how a couple of the female characters are treated.

Orihime does get to become stronger and go off to save people later, and Rukia eventually gives Ichigo what-for over the "MUST SAVE EVERYONE!" bit.

Hmm, so many responses:

the first opening of Bleach *does* indeed rock, and Orange Range also does a very awesome Naruto closing. (Viva Rock) I'd youtube it, 'cause it's so cute.

The new VM opening is growing on me, but the old one was loud and peppy, and I appreciated that.

FMA is so fucking good. I loved the Barry the Chopper episode, and I actually like it *more* because it doesn't happen in the manga. Basically, the anime-writers decided to introduce his character earlier, so that it would be more interesting when he appeared at the fifth lab--and it's such a good filler episode, it ends up contributing very strongly to the character development and even the plot. Aaaah, but I really want you to see my favorite character, and does doesn't appear until what, volume 17?

DID YOU KNOW that on the Japanese covers of FMA, there's a parody of the front cover underneath the dust cover, and on the spine, the author draws little ghosts (and sometimes dialogue) for all the people that died in that volume? Even the piddly random characters!

Orihime *does* get stronger. And then she gets kidmapped as a result, and then everyone has to save her which has been the story arc for THE PAST THREE YEARS...was that a spoiler? Good, stop watching and go find something quality to stare blankly at.

No, but really, soul society is a major arc. Those 16 episodes leading up to it are not only the best episodes in the whole series, they're also just a lead-in.

(Uh, arguably, Orihime's powers come from Ichigo. So that could be a reason. Or it could be because the author is an ass and the readers are all little boys).

There's so much making out in VM. I can't believe you tried to tell me otherwise!

I like Orihime, Rukia, and Uryu Ishida too!!! And you've pretty much summed up all my feelings about Bleach. It just....takes too long. And it's all about Ichigo leveling up to save everyone....Orihime is (in my mind) perfectly capable of dealing with things herself. And if I were writing this...I would have made Rukia into an insatiable badass. But that's me.

Fullmetal Alchemist is LOADS better. I've got few to no gripes with that show in the least. In fact.....it's pretty freaking awesome. It IS good to see a protagonist that's afraid he's going to die. Perhaps the difference is that FMA is written by a woman and Bleach is written by a man. That kinda matters in Japanese society. My favorite FMA moment was when I had Adult Swim on and an episode of FMA near the end came on and I didn't want to watch it because I hadn't gotten close to that far yet and I was trying to avoid spoilers, so I got up to turn off the TV and then I just stood there with my hand on the power button watching it all the way up to the first commercial break. And my roommate came in and said, "What are you doing?" and I said, "I don't know what's going on, but it's freaking AWESOME!". FMA = win.
