holy shit, really? I can't even remember how long I've been drinking loose tea!
So, what kind (flavor) was it? And not Twinnings brand, I hope. Theirs taste awful.
If you ever go to Steep and Brew, they use loose tea there--and a dollar cup will last you all day, because you can keep asking for more hot water. (If you go, I really like Russian Caravan).
It's not Twinnings....it was stuff that they had at Woodman's. I can't remember the exact combination, but I know there were apricots and peaches and parts of a rose and other stuff.
I don't often frequent coffee shops because I'm lazy as hell, but maybe I'll try that Russian Caravan business.
Does this mean I can use my own loose tea all day, without having to empty/refresh the diffuser?
Yes, I do think it tastes better. Of course, that might specifically be because there's a lot more stuff mixed into the flavor this than bagged tea (which is usually just one thing). This one has like, a few kinds of fruit and parts of roses and shit.
It's (usually) not recommended to re-use tea leaves over and over because the tea gets increasingly bitter/astringent and nasty-tasting. Experiment, tho'! Some whites, greens, and even some oolongs can be re-steeped. Right now i only have 1 tea in my pantry that i re-steep (a pearl tea made from green and white tea leaves wrapped up with jasmine petals) because i usually don't have much luck with it, and i've had especially disgusting results from black teas. (Some people do re-steep blacks, but it's not something i, personally, care for.) But it's all according to your taste -- try it and see what you like!
All teas have some caffeine. Green teas have the least, oolong teas are in the middle, and black teas have the most -- tho' even black tea still has less caffeine than coffee does. Chais are *usually* based on black teas (if it's based on something else, it will probably say so), and so, yes, they'll have caffeine (unless it's been decaffeinated).
Loose leaf teas tend to have better flavor than bagged teas because *most* bagged teas are made from what're called tea "fannings", which is essentially not really whole leaves at all but just tea dust. It seems like over the past 10 years or so, however, there have been more and more companies who have been making high end teabags that actually use whole leaves.
I swear that the information on the panel at Woodman's said it was decaffeinated, but I guess it's good to know that in general, teas have caffeine.
I will not re-steep my tea! I don't think it's a green tea....but I'm not sure if it's oolong or black. Next time, I'll take more detailed notes on what I'm filling the bag with.
I should also try and figure out if there's a cheap way to get tea. I think this stuff will last me a while, but I spent over $8 on it!
