Buffy, Season 7: Episodes 1-7

I like the background DVD music for season 7, it's so epic, and unlike previous Buffy music, it seems. A sweeping orchestral, worthy of Buffy.

Random note from the end of episode 1: So, whatever they're dealing with is clearly epic. Spike never met the Mayor, and I certainly don't think that the Master, the Mayor, or Warren had any sort of psychological effect on Spike, as they might have on Buffy. The Big Bad is something specifically posited against Buffy herself, or something even bigger.

I also hope that whatever they do with Willow and "Gaia" makes sense. I hate when series introduce religious/mystical beliefs this late in the game.

"Beneath You"
Oh yeah, so last time was Istanbul, and now it's Germany. Every time, these girls get to a place of relief, but then get taken by surprise. Both of them were also pretty good at fighting, and both get killed with a blade.

Yay, Slayer dreams! It's been a while, right?

Random OP Note: My favorite shot is of Buffy, blindfolded with some scarlet fabric, doing some weird kung-fu move. I also love that they kept the "OMGWTF" shot from Tabula Rasa.

Angsty Spike talking to rats! Yay! I wonder what's making him crazy. Flashbacks to his ordeal to get a soul seems a bit farfetched.

I like the nuclear family vibe of Xander, Buffy, and Dawn.

Okay, this principal guy seems really familiar to me. I can't place him. Oh yeah! I thought in the first episode that he was the one who put the amulet out and called the spirits into the high school.

Yay, Buffy goes to look for Spike! Un-yay, the door closes behind her!

I don't want Giles to be a guest star, :( I want him to stay on the show! Buffy needs Giles! I like that Willow is still the same. "What if I go all veiny and homicidal and stuff?" Yay, Willow! Of course Xander and Buffy will still be your friends!

"What you need is help. Fortunately, you've got me." HE'S SO CUTE. But his roots aren't showing? Is it the same Spike?

LOL Nancy. I like Xander telling him to shut up, and Xander and Dawn nailing Buffy for not telling them about Spike.

I like that Spike's relationship with Dawn is irrevocably damaged. And Buffy's flashback are well-done, too. Skittish? That's not the word I would use for it.

Good God, Buffy has terrible CGI. Especially compared to Angel.

"Is there anyone here who hasn't slept together?" That look exchanged between Spike and Xander was priceless.

What the hell is Spike's problem? I know he's been a jerk in the past, but I feel like there was always a mild code of honor. Why punch Anya twice? Why go after Buffy so hardcore?

Anya, what terrible timing! Poor Spike! "God, please help me." Going into shock - violence changes him, and what changes him back?

Spike seeks solace in a church? Interesting.

"Spike, have you completely lost your mind?"
"Well, yeah, where have you been all night?"

"It's what you wanted, right?" to Buffy, and to God.

"Can we rest now? Buffy?" Embracing the cross that makes him smoke.

Oh my God, I am so in love with these scenes with Spike! These are things that I would write! I don't know what that says about me....but man.

I would really love to read scripts of everything he says. Can you own Buffy scripts? That'd be sweet.

OMF, the Willow episode was so cute! I really felt for Willow, being all, "You mean....I'm not alone??" OMG WILLOW, I WOULD HUG YOU!

"Selfless"
WOW, I loved this Anya episode! The flashbacks were hilarious: "I will hit you with fruit and various meats!" And the death of Halfrek was intense - I was expecting Anya to get killed, but this was much more raw emotion.

I forgot how much I love watching confident and in-charge Buffy. I like that they took her to a dark place last season, but with where I'm at in life right now, I like empowered!Buffy a lot.

"Him"
LOVED Dawn's rant and then literally falling in love. I like Buffy being back in high school. It makes me want to re-watch seasons 2 and 3.

LOL FOREVER at Xander and Willow being horrified that they were unknowingly checking Dawn out. I LOVE THIS SHOW. I hate Buffy's bangs. Why bangs, Buffy?? We've been through this before!

OH MY GOD. HIM: GOOD EPISODE, OR BEST EPISODE?

"Conversations With Dead People"
I LOVE JONATHAN AND ANDREW. Even more, I love Andrew and Warren. Them quoting that Star Wars scene?! LOVE.

Willow talking to Tara through Cassie....IT'S SO SAD. Okay, until we figure out what's going on.

I like the Big Bad's use of people that the Scoobies trust. It's creepy, it's emotional, and it's obviously effective. Willow figured out that Cassie wasn't Cassie, but I don't think Dawn figured out that Joyce wasn't Joyce. Andrew's murdering of Jonathan was unexpected, and Warren makes such a creepy, leering bad guy.

Why is Spike biting people again? :( Buffy looks resolute in the end: she knew she had to kill Anya, and now it looks like she's going to have to do the same thing with Spike. What happened to tortured, nonsensical-yet-perfectly-sensical cross-hugging Spike? I think I could rewatch that scene every day for the rest of my life.

I miss Giles, :(

As always, reading coffeeandink's old Buffy reviews makes me almost salivate, and wish that I could analyze TV so well. Selfless and Him

This puts many fingers on what bothers me about Anya, and Anya/Xander, and I wish that I had written it myself.

Man, it's seriously been ten thousand years since I've seen any of these episodes (okay, slight exaggeration, but I don't think I've watched them again since first run), so it's such a delight to read back over your impressions! I remember Conversations with Dead People being one of my favourite episodes of the season -- classic Buffy creepiness with a dash of silly and then of course aughhhh heart-rending as well. But, hee! Perhaps the best scene mentioned here:

"Is there anyone here who hasn't slept together?" That look exchanged between Spike and Xander was priceless.

I remember my friend and I crack!shipped Spike/Xander for the longest time, so that line and the subsequent look was just... pure gold. XD XD

I love your play-by-play Buffy reactions :)

More angst coming! The big bad this season is very bad, and also something that's linked to an earlier episode! You will find out sooooooooon. Conversations with Dead People makes me cry and scared! There are a couple more really gut-wrenching episodes coming up, one on Willow and one on Dawn. And then you're going to be done with Buffy!!

I'd have to rewatch the episode to make a strong argument, but I wasn't convinced that Joyce was fake. For one thing, that would have required the same being to be in two places at once--which it doesn't do. For another, Joyce never appears in an evil form. She appears in dreams and visions, and she always gives proper advice. I think she's actually a ghost.

Maybe. I just assumed she was because Cassie wasn't really Cassie. She looked sort of evil on the couch - suddenly she was skinless and hollowed-out eyes and screaming, but that might have been the whole house-being-possessed thing.
