Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, eps 13-16
Hey, so. More thoughts on Code Geass.
Again, I'm not going for a full synopsis, but random opinions on what has taken place (much as I write about everything!).
New OP for reals now, new song and everything (although the animation looks mostly the same?). I think I liked the first song better, although I'm not very impressed with any of the OPs and EDs of this series.
We start with the funeral of Shirley's father. He was killed in a battle orchestrated by Lelouch, although Lelouch didn't find out that Shirley's father was killed until Shirley told him at the end of the last episode, in the rain.
CC points out to Lelouch that he has killed many people, and finds it strange that only when he knows the victim's family, do his actions depress him. CC tells Lelouch that every person killed in his cross-fire is someone's father, someone's sister, someone who is loved.
Karen has heard Lelouch's voice without his helmet on a few times now. How does she not recognize him from school??
Shirley is told by Britannian military people that Lelouch might be involved in the rebellion. For some reason, she decides to go to a battle. Lelouch is dressed as Zero in a mecha, and ends up getting hit. Shirley goes up to the mecha and sees Zero, although the helmet is lifted from his face enough for her to see a splotch of blood and - Lelouch's face. She picks up a gun lying on the ground.
Later, Shirley is sitting in her room, writing in her diary, cradling the gun in her lap. Lelouch searches Shirley's room with CC, trying to figure out what she knows. It's revealed that in the battle, Shirley didn't shoot Lelouch, but a gray-haired member of the Britannian military.
A new gray-haired man shows up, named Mao. He has the power of the Geass too, and was given his power by CC, just like Lelouch. Mao can read minds, and he's a little bit crazy from listening to people's thoughts so much.
Because Mao is a mind-reader, he is really good at manipulating other people. He gets Shirley to act on her rage and betrayal by Lelouch, and gives her a gun. In the end, Lelouch uses his Geass to erase Shirley's memory. She ends up with a mind-wipe, barely remembering who Lelouch is at all. To me, this was just like Raye Penber's girlfriend in Death Note. A woman finds out too much information, and the protagonist with special powers has to "off them" in order to continue their charade. here, though, Shirley isn't dead - just a shell.
In episode 16, it's revealed that Mao isn't dead. He kidnaps Lelouch's sister Nanali. Lelouch and Suzaku end up teaming up to save her. There is a flashback to the Britannian attack on Japan. Suzaku, Lelouch, and Nanali are making their way through a fresh battlefield. Suzaku is stunned by the dead bodies everywhere, while Lelouch tells him to keep walking.
Lelouch as a child is very much like grown-up Lelouch. He overcomes Shirley's father's death by acknowledging that while it was sad, it was also a necessary means to the end he's trying to achieve - one which will make everyone's life better. Lelouch decides it's worth it, and keeps going on - ignoring the carnage around him, much like he had to do as a child with his sister on his back.
Lelouch ends up using the Geass on himself so that Mao can't read his mind, which also kind of upset me, because Light did that in Death Note, too.
In the end, CC kills Mao and it's revealed that Suzaku killed his father when he was a child. WHOA.
In conclusion for these: The plot twists are fun to watch, although it's mildly annoying that some of them are taken right from the anime/manga series, Death Note. I'm not sure if they were purposely ripping it off because Death Note is so popular, but the series needn't do that. It's strong enough on its own.
Huzzah for angst!
