Holy shit.

I just watched the first episode on disc 5 of Buffy. "The Body." Or rather, I watched the episode that came before it, got to the end, and said, "WHAT THE FUCK." And then immediately put in the next DVD.

I know lots of Buffy spoilers, and I knew this was going to happen. But. Not like that.

Jesus Christ. If I can ever write as well as Joss Whedon....Well, I don't even know. What I would do. I think this might be one of the best-written episodes of TV I've seen. The only Buffy one that rivals it is "Restless." And some West Wing ones. And who the hell ever thought that Anya would be the one to make me cry the hardest?

Beware of massive spoilers in the comments of this entry.

wow, I'm really glad you mentioned that ep. When I watched, I always felt I'd missed something--and when I checked to see what you were talking about, I found the missing link! Seems I skipped from the death to the funeral, without any time in the morgue!

Oh, wow! Yeah, you should definitely watch it! It doesn't do a whole lot in moving the plot along, but I don't think I've ever seen a more accurate representation of how people behave when somebody dies. The way silence and camera angles and everything else are used are just....wow.

Yes, I think it is one of the most well-executed episodes ever on television. I wish it had gotten the recognition it deserved... But poor Joyce! POOR BUFFY!

Well, obviously I watched it when I found it. If I hadn't watched it, I wouldn't know that I hadn't watched it!

I love season 5 of Buffy.

Did I ever tell you that I met Kristine Sutherland (the woman who plays Buffy's mom)? She came here last spring with her daughter, who was (still is?) looking at our school. I was signed up to host two prospective students over lunch, and so I got there to pick them up and her mom introduced herself as Kristine and I was like, "hm...you look familiar..." And when we got outside I couldn't keep it in anymore, so I said, "I'm sorry, I have to say - you look exactly like the person who plays Buffy's mom on 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer.' Do you know that show?" And she just smiled and said, "Yes, that's who I am." Of course, I laughed and thought she was joking - but nope, she was completely serious.

So essentially I ate lunch with Buffy's mom and her (real) daughter in our college cafeteria. Crazy!!

OH MY GOD, HOW COULD YOU NOT HAVE TOLD ME THIS BEFORE NOW? WE ARE TOTALLY FIGHTING.

Really, though, that's so awesome! I don't even know what I would do! Did you get her autograph??

Bring it on.

Haha, in all seriousness, yeah, it was pretty cool. Totally disorienting, though. I called my mom (an avid fan of the show and owner of all seven seasons) right after I dropped them back off at Middle College and had a dorky freak-out fest. Sadly (and my mother chastised me for this), I did not get Kristine's autograph, for several reasons; one of them being that I did not have paper or a writing utensil with me (and to use a napkin seemed to me a little pathetic), and the other being that her daughter was there to find out about the college. I only had an hour to spend with them, so I didn't want to make a big deal about Kristine's "stardom" and partially neglect the reason they came here in the first place. I guess I felt that it would have given off a bad impression, among other things.

So all I have is my story...which I enjoy telling to anyone who watches Buffy. But yeah, it was a WTF kind of day.
