Utena icon is kind of like having a Buffy icon?
Since I was tired and not feeling well yesterday (and, in retrospect, quite crabby), I stayed home and watched 3 episodes of Angel, and 2 episodes of Buffy. I am now exactly halfway through Buffy season 5 and Angel season 2.
I had been assured by at least one friend of mine that even if I liked Riley in the beginning of his storyline, I would not like him in the end. So I was prepared to dislike him, and in the end, I did not. At first, I didn't quite understand the purpose in going to the vampire "brothel," but I think I get it now. And in the end, I sympathized with him a lot. Everything that Xander said to Buffy was true: Angel broke her heart, and when he left, it makes sense that she would just shut down. And Riley was amazing, but she shut him out anyway. And because he was very much in love with her, it hurt him - a lot. Also, the fact that I find Riley extremely attractive probably helps his case, :D Really, though, I loved Riley as a character and the way he fit in with the rest of the show. I still feel kind of miffed about his character's abrupt "ending," though. I've only seen one episode after he left, and it was cheesy (Anya and Willow fight, recreate one of Anya's ex-boyfriends, everyone's friends in the end; Buffy randomly cried a lot, but in a very non-Buffy way.). Am hoping they do deal with her feelings in a non-cheesy way, although her conversation with Dawn was a nice touch.
While the episode in which Riley left got pretty melodramatic, I still liked the script and the ideas behind the characters' actions (Spike's, Buffy's, Riley's). I still don't believe in Xander's love for Anya. And when he went after Buffy and convinced her to go after Riley, the shot of him standing there, turning and looking after her? I think he still carries a torch for her. I wish they would spend a little more time on Willow and Xander. I feel a bit out of touch with them lately, and their bond with Buffy is one of the best parts of the show.
The stuff with Buffy's mom being sick got old after a while too, but I still like Dawn and the fact that Buffy and her mom refuse to pretend for a minute that she is not part of their family.
Also: OMG SPIKE! I loved the flashbacks of his quirky pre-vampire Victorian self, but it seems like every time he's on screen, I love him more. The comic relief is funny ("You want points for not biting bleeding disaster victims?" "Well....yeah." "You're disgusting." "....What does it take?!"), but I love the way he falls in love hard and obsesses over it, but is still totally wise and knowing when he talks to Riley over wine about what it's like to love Buffy.
Holy crap to the stuff going down on Angel! I love how twisted Angel is, and him locking the Wolfram & Hart lawyers in with Darla and Drusilla to be massacred? WAS SO TOTALLY BADASS. Seriously. Amazing. Gunn, Wesley, and Cordelia got all huffy, but I agree with Angel, really. And lately, I find Lindsey really hot. Of course, I find him more attractive when he helps Angel out.
I think it's lame that that Angel fired Cordy, Gunn, and Wesley, and his ignoring them. And really that they've been so ignored in general. Yeah, Angel/Darla is fascinating, but maybe more time could be spent on the other characters' reactions to the situation, aside from "OMG, Angel's been acting so weird!"
I suspect that Cordelia is falling in love with Angel! But I could be wrong. I really like what they did with her character, though - torturing her with visions at the end of last season, and now she's much more empathetic than she was before. I also love Gunn. Would love Wesley more if not for annoying girlfriend.
Chad and I also split the last White Russian Kahlua that was in the fridge, so all in all, it was a good night!
