Angel, Season 1

Hokai, so I finished watching the first season of Angel! Wheee! Overall, I like the show, although at this point, it's nowhere near as strong as Buffy. Still, I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt, because Buffy wasn't that great in the first season, either.

For those new to my blog posts about TV shows, please note that I'm not usually very wordy (except sometimes with Battlestar Galactica) or meta-y, and usually go for the gushing and the squee.

I loved Doyle, and I'm really sad to see him gone. I felt like he and Angel really understood each other, and OMGHISEYES are so beautimous. I liked that Cordelia got his "gift," though.

I love, love, loved the episodes when Buffy came. I especially loved her fight with Angel after Faith turned herself in. How Angel explained that Buffy can move on, but Angel can't, he's stuck in this place where he still loves her, and he can't cover it up by being with someone else. In the season finale, the scrolls say that Angel will become human when he's fulfilled his prophecy. Maybe by that time, Buffy will be as old as he was when he got turned into a vampire, and then they can be married and snarky until they get old and die! OMG YES.

I think the character whose evolution I liked the most was Wesley's. He hasn't changed a whole lot, but his demeanor has. You can tell that he cares a lot about Angel and Cordelia, and I also really, really liked that he was forced to deal with all of his issues with Faith. In the end, he grew a pair, and I look forward to his kicking ass.

Oh, Faith. I loved her reappearance here, but what killed me the most was her fight with Angel in the rain, and then her breaking down into tears. I liked that she and Buffy finally got to fight it out verbally, and that when it came down to it, Buffy still tried to protect her.

I also thoroughly enjoyed Gunn. What this series needs is a larger main cast, so I'm looking forward to Gunn joining it.

Episodes I enjoyed:
In the Dark (Oz visits with the ring from Buffy, Angel ends up destroying it)
Rm w/a VU (Cordelia fights the ghost in her new apartment. Cordelia got characterization!)
I Will Remember You (Buffy visits; Angel becomes mortal, but gave it up to save her life. OMGSOGOOD, BUFFY/ANGEL FOREVER!!!!)
Hero (Doyle's death)
She (Jheira was so sweet. I wish she would come back. Strong females FTW)
Eternity (actually, this one sucked until the last third, when Angel went evil. I LOVE WHEN ANGEL IS EVIL.)
Five by Five (FAITH!)
Sanctuary (FAITH! BUFFY!)
War Zone (Arrival of Gunn)
To Shanshu in L.A. (Finale. I feel this was the best Angel episode that had no Buffy crossover plots)

So, yeah. 9 out of 20+ episodes were really good, and the rest were pretty "meh," although I do like the character Kate Lockley. I dislike that a lot of the minor female characters and victims on the show are often placed into stereotypical roles. I think I've read that this gets better as time goes on? We'll see.

Also, as for the very, very end of the season? OMGWTF DARLA! Am very exciting to see how that will spice up the show.

(PLEASE NOTE! Unlike Buffy, I am relatively unspoiled for Angel. So please don't spoil anything in the comments! I also have yet to watch seasons 5-7 of Buffy. Thank you.)

Despite the fact that Buffy was probably the most major TV influence of my ENTIRE LIFE EVER, I never really got into Angel aside from catching a few reruns on TNT. But I always meant to get around to seeing I Will Remember You... so thanks to this post, I've been inspired enough to watch it on YouTube right now. Ohhhh, the angst. :( Angel has just turned human and stepped out into the sunlight to kiss Buffy and OMG THEY WERE LIKE THE GIANT ROMANTIC ANGST OF MY CHILDHOOD. IT'S ALL COMING BACK! I'm probably going to cry by the time I get through all this...

YES, OMG, YES, WATCH IT!!

You also should really watch the Faith episodes, Five by Five and Sanctuary (They're back-to-back episodes). Not only is there Faith-ness (love Faith), but Wesley deals with stuff leftover from Buffy, and Buffy herself comes, too. Do it!

HEART Wesley!!!
Yes, Angel as a show is more uneven than Buffy, but... it's still enjoyable.
See you THIS WEEKEND!
