Memery

A lot of people have put this meme in their LiveJournals, so I figure that I should do it as well.

The meme is:
10 things I assume you know about me

1. I'm a senior university student, majoring in Political Science and English. I don't know what I'll do after I graduate, :(
2. I have a boyfriend named Antoine. He's 4 years older than me, and it's my second relationship....ever. Boys never liked me in high school! I didn't believe Antoine when he told me he liked me.
3. Although there are aspects of the Church I don't agree with, I am Catholic. I try to go to church every week. I have rosaries (yes, more than one), I have saint cards, and I have Holy water on top of one of my bookshelves. I get pissed when people assume that I don't think critically about my faith, be they born-again Christians or atheists/agnostics.
4. I have a brother and a sister, but they're a lot older than me. My sister is 15 years older, married, and has 3 kids, ages 4, 6, and 8. They live in the same town as my parents. My brother lives in L.A.
5. I like storytelling of all forms, if it's well done: movies, BOOKS, TV, comics, manga, video games, anime, anything. Since I have no prejudice against one medium over the other, I'm a bit of a geek.
6. I am a feminist.
7. People who read my blog started out as mostly people I know in real life. I have acquired lots of Internet friends, though. Most of them are on LiveJournal, I think.
8. My part-time job is being a page/messenger for the state Senate.
9. I like alcohol sometimes, but have never gotten drunk. Only giggly. Have never done any other drug.
10. I'm good at expressing myself through the written word, but bad at expressing myself through the spoken word, especially when I'm feeling uncomfortable or insecure. As such, people who don't know me very well (even if they spend a lot of time around me) often think I'm a bitch all the time. I get upset about this.

People think I'm a bitch all the time, too! One of the new folks here told me (while out drinking) that I seemed "very aggressive." WTF?!

Sometimes I think part of it might be because I'm female? I get the feeling in some situations that if I was giggling like an idiot instead of asserting an opinion or being stoic, I'd be more well-liked. Some people think my friend Steph is mean, but I've never seen her be mean to anyone in my entire life. Steph is also an assertive person.

First of all - sorry, I know that this is like the fourth time I've deleted and re-posted this comment. When it showed up each time, I kept thinking of things I wanted to change or add.

Anyway. I like #3; my opinion regarding Church is a similar one. It's hard sometimes being Catholic (or even religious) here. This college is super-liberal and many, many students are non-religious; that, of course, doesn't bother me. What's hard to deal with is the fact that lots of them are rabidly anti-religious. If someone engaged me in honest questions about Catholicism and wanted to really talk about things they didn't like about the Church, that would be totally cool. But most people are just like, "I was raised Christian and now I hate Christianity!! RAWR!" While I think most of my friends are careful not to directly insult me, it gets obnoxious sometimes to hear things like, "Oh, can you believe I was Christian once?" -"Yeah, happens to the best of us." I think there's this general unspoken consensus that all practicing religious people - especially ones from Christian denominations - are mindless, Bible-banging sheep, which clearly isn't true. Maybe it's because these particular anti-religious people have no personal reasons for wanting to be affiliated with any religion (completely fine; religion should be a personal choice), so they don't see any rational reasons for why ANYONE would. It's frustrating.

Yes, religion is weird -- our whole culture has trouble coping with it. I don't do religion myself, and some people have a problem with that. Ah well. Besides, there's a big difference between an institution and its members.

The biggest problem I have with some religious folks is when they're convinced that the world is a black and white place. Then again, I'm also a little suspicious of anyone who follows ANY tradition unquestioningly and without thinking about it at all, ever.

It is strange. I probably don't have to tell you that students are liberal here, too. I'm liberal. Nothing's more upsetting than having someone find out I'm Catholic, and then having them assume that I am not a feminist, that I harbor a hatred for anyone who is not straight, etc.

There definitely are Bible-banging sheep out there, and some of them attend my church!

I agree, though - if someone doesn't want to be affiliated with a religion, I'm totally cool with that. But when they get mad or indignant that I do, it gets into WTF area.

I really relate to some of the things on your list. #9--same goes for me! If boys ever liked me, they never told me. I'm a feminist!

I really respect your faith--I think I'd be religious if I could. I did try, for a long time, but it never worked for me.

As for #10, you seem very friendly and nice to me, so I don't know where that bitch stuff comes from. My boss says, a bitch is a Babe In Total Charge of Herself. :D Also, I understand sarcasm, and some people just don't...

re: Catholicism -- I was raised Protestant, so I'm curious -- what are saint cards?

I guess saint "cards" aren't really the important aspect of it, but there are lots of cards you can get that have the image of a saint on one side, and a prayer asking the saint to pray to God on your behalf on the other side. They're a little bit larger than trading cards, and have a "gotta catch 'em all!" vibe going on. I don't have a ton of them, but possibly ten or so.
