IDK if it has the same crash reduction effect, but you can also just turn the AR off if you want to keep the camera off much of the time without removing the option for hilarious Pokemon photos.
Turning the AR off also makes it easier to catch some of the ones that move more. A little bit easier. Freaking Zubats.
