WisCon Linkspam

At this point, I need to do a linkspam because I have 5 browser windows open, and in one of those browser windows, 82 tabs. It's linkspam with minimal commentary because I'm at home dealing with a family death. So if you fail in my comments, I will come for you eventually.

Please read my 101 Primer before commenting; I will know if you didn't.

There was some fail on a few panels/at the Con in general. As always, read the comments.

[livejournal.com profile] shadesong was on the Take Back the SF Panel and posts about what happened here.

[livejournal.com profile] asim on the "Take Back the SF Panel here.

[livejournal.com profile] hps_sterling here.

[livejournal.com profile] karnythia briefly discusses the Take Back the SF panel here.

[livejournal.com profile] commodorified posts here, self-proclaiming that she committed fail at the Porn Crushes the Patriarchy panel by being unaware of what had already taken place at the Take Back the SF panel.

[livejournal.com profile] thewayoftheid posts here.
If you're really serious about making Wiscon a POC-safe space, you must step your muthafukkin' game up.

[livejournal.com profile] karnythia on Wiscon Squee and Fail or Why I Still Don't Love Cons. Fail in the comments.

[livejournal.com profile] vito_excalibur has commentary to the comments on the posts being made.
But to everyone responding with "that's why I would never go to Wiscon! that's why I don't call myself a feminist! because it's all about bashing men!"?

You're right. You're absolutely right. That is, in fact, what Wiscon is all about. I was totally lying in my previous post. In reality I've spent the last three days physically beating on a selection of men which the concom had tied up and prepared for us before we got there. With occasional breaks for taunting, and yoga. I don't think you'd enjoy it. You should probably not come.

[livejournal.com profile] brown_betty already inadvertently responded, by writing in response to Wrede's Thirteenth Child here.

[livejournal.com profile] cofax7 has a writeup of pretty much all of her panels the panels she attended here.

[livejournal.com profile] vito_excalibur with another writeup of all her panels and links to other things as well here.

[livejournal.com profile] littlebutfierce live-blogged the Class panel here, which was awesome because I did not take any notes but WTF WITH THAT FAILTASTIC AUDIENCE MEMBER. The panel itself was good.

[livejournal.com profile] takumashii live-blogged the book cover panel.

[livejournal.com profile] takumashii live-blogged the Authorial Intent panel.

[livejournal.com profile] badgerbag suggests people holding their own Girlycons everywhere ever, here. [livejournal.com profile] cabell, WILL YOU DO A GIRLYCON WITH ME?! I will bring "Ever After" and "Little Women" and Princess Tutu and Sailor Moon!

Lastly....programming is open already for next year's WisCon! So all of those ideas you're afraid you might forget? You can submit them now! Do it!

I feel like we could start assigning points to fail.

For example...."We've got a spectacular Fail-Dive over here in the comments to Person X's post. Not only did the Failer take a conversation originally about POC and make it about their hurt white feelings, but they also chastised POC who called them out on it! This fail is 10 points."
And then someone could be like, "I have to disagree with you there, Bob. The Failer also immediately posted in their own LJ about how mean POC are, and how she's thinking of suspending her LJ account because she 'can't take it.' The drama easily makes this fail hit 13 points."

partly just cause I like to know if it's always the same person doing that but everyone's too polite to mention it, so it keeps happening every year, etc and so on!

I'm okay with it not being deleted; I'm sure everyone wants to know anyway.

Ok! I offered to delete it because i just don't want you to be a target for him if he decides to mix it up. I mean, if he'd like to mix it up and enjoys arguing with Marxists, i have a suggestion for him.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!

Dying of laughter re: sports commentary for fail.

Also, manga programming! I am very with you. I feel like the shounen manga impromptu panel didn't go as in depth as I wanted because most of us had not read overlapping series and were not as familiar with the genre as people like [livejournal.com profile] joannkatana. I will volunteer or brainstorm or whatever, because really, I want to talk about manga and politics SO BAD. Well, manga, politics, OPPRESSION, and zombie angel eyeballs.

Andy has reminded me that if yunz propose an anime/manga panel for next year, ping me for the name of someone who should not be allowed anywhere near it. Johanna and i saw -- actually walked out on -- some spectacular fail on an anime panel a few years back.

^_^ I showed familiarity! Even though I didn't realize I was reading shoujo manga... ^___^V

[identity profile] mystickeeper.livejournal.com 2009-05-28 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Manga and politics! Like, literally! We could do a panel of Eagle: The Making of an American President, and President Dad, and it would be heinous. [I know this isn't what you meant, but the idea amuses me very mcuh.]

We could have a panel at which we shriek about Kaori Yuki!

[identity profile] mystickeeper.livejournal.com 2009-05-28 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no! But how can we keep people away from panels?

I don't want fail at an anime panel, :( I'll have sakura petals ready to sprinkle if need be.

[identity profile] vito-excalibur.livejournal.com 2009-05-28 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you can keep them *away* - perhaps you could warn the panelists and not call on them. Or just ask them not to go?
ext_34204: (Default)

[identity profile] joannkatana.livejournal.com 2009-05-28 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
I know. I mean, I was pretty unfamiliar with the *categories* of the manga, but given example titles, I could go - oh, yeah! I know what you mean! (and generally rattle off a few more examples. Or fake it really well. Except for Shoujo of which I hadn't a clue).

Let me put it this way: Are you pronouncing the asterisk??
wrdnrd: (Default)

[personal profile] wrdnrd 2009-05-28 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well, 3 things:

1) Strongly suggest that they not be the mod (which they were last time).

2) Strongly suggest that they not be ON the panel at all.

(I believe the programming form allows a person to suggest people to be on the panel. Also, if i'm remembering correctly, there's a space for notes, where you could make the strong suggestion that this person not be on the panel and especially not be the mod.)

3) If this person still shows up in the audience, panelists / the mod could avoid calling on the person or, at least, could be prepared to keep them from derailing.

I will send you an email, probably tomorrow, discussing this in more detail.

Thank you for the extra context of why you needed to walk out -- it helps me put things in better perspective! It was my 1st time moderating a panel, so i think i've been prepared to take on a lot of responsibility for how it went.

I'm glad to hear there's been so much extra-panel discussion going on about this topic! That is the best possible outcome i could hope for! I see that BC has already starting working on a proposal for another class panel for next year (sparked by [livejournal.com profile] oyceter's question during this year's Q&A), and i'm really looking forward to it.

OH, I get it now!

I have to say that my experience wasn't quite so dreadful, but...
1) There was only one panelist besides the two of us,
2) It was a pretty low-depth panel, so I didn't have much to be frustrated about.

But now I know what you mean!

[personal profile] wrdnrd 2009-05-28 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok! I just wanted you to be aware of the fail that was this particular anime/manga panel from a few years back, since it was so specifically ONE PERSON who caused the fail. That mod actually CUT OFF another panelist (Mari {whose last name i can't remember} from Japan) and said, "I want to finish my point." o_O

Oooooo. I suspect I know who you might be talking about (was Mely on the panel), but want to confirm. And get gossip.
