I dedicate this post to [livejournal.com profile] takumashii

So, as some of you might be aware, [livejournal.com profile] were_duck and I both work at A Room of One's Own, an independent feminist bookstore in Madison.

[livejournal.com profile] were_duck was sad about the fact that DC Comics got rid of its Minx line, which was Western comics for young adults, mostly aiming at girls. After a grand total of TWO YEARS, they canceled it because major bookstores put it in the graphic novel sections instead of YA sections.

SO HOW ABOUT A YA COMIC SECTION? That's what we're doing at Room. Gretchen knows lots about Western comics, so we're cool in that department. But I am supposed to help with manga!

Criteria:
--There isn't a lot of room, we won't be able to select many series. I suggested 8, and [livejournal.com profile] were_duck said we might be able to do half of that. So, we want 4-5 high quality series, people!

--It's YA and Room is okay with responsible discussions of sexuality and transgender stuff. But, for example, I'm not going to suggest Cantarella because HELLO random incest! No hentai, etc.

--Something that sells well would obviously be nice, although I will point out that I don't think this is the Naruto/Bleach crowd.

My Suggestions, and justifications:
Vampire Knight (for those crazy Twilight kids)
Scott Pilgrim (EVERYONE LOVES SCOTT PILGRIM, and a movie w/Michael Cera is coming out soon)
After School Nightmare (Gender-bendy fascinating stuff, but I understand [livejournal.com profile] were_duck's hesitation as it kind of sucks at dealing with transgender issues.
Fruits Basket (more gender-bendy stuff in the manga, a solid series over all. BUT IS IT FEMINIST?)
xxxHolic (It's pretty, it's current, and it's great storytelling.)
NANA (Two women in the modern world. I feel like it does a nice portrayal of relationships, etc. Soap opera drama for the ladies. LOVES IT.)
Tramps Like Us (Sumire is the definition of an independent woman in the modern world, and I love her unconventional relationship with Momo.)
W Juliet (Again with the cross-dressing hidden gender identities! I've only read one volume. Does this continue to be good?)
Revolutionary Girl Utena (Duh!)
Nausicaa (Duh!)

Previously, the manga-buying was done by people who don't know much about it. In addition to Western comics, we carry a few series by Tezuka (can anyone tell me if Buddha is YA or not?), Disgaea, MaidMachinegun, and Venus in Love. I don't know anything about those last three.
